Anyone headding down (or up) to the Fort for some hunting? myself and one buddy are planning on spending the weekend there...far away from the hustle and bustle that is christmas shopping.

I LOVE ONLINE SHOPPING AND GIFT WRAPPING.

anyway just wanted to see if anyone had similar plans.

So sitting by the phone Thursday afternoon waiting for 5:00PM to come around and I dial the "hot-line" and they decided thet *NO* training areas would be open the weekend of the 15-16, sorry we will see you next weekend.

I was bummed, my buddy and I had everything packed and ready to go, but nowhere to go.

anyway we went scouting at Boggs Mountain and Cache Creek, overall a fine weekend but no pigs.

Come down to Vandenberg (if you have access); the hogs are starting to move. Missed a nice boar with the muzzleloader last night. Can't believe I missed! I sure would like to grow out of this flinch, but seeing as how I'm almost 50, maybe I won't.

Can you get a guest hunter onboard? If so, I can help you with that flinch.

So I made it down to FHL Thursday and Friday for some pig hunting, my first at the "Fort" what i failed to know was that there was an elk hunt as well so some of the training areas were for elk hunting only. my first day out i came across one herd of elk, what amazing big animals they are. I got to spend 2 days in TA 19, it was hills wit oak and mixed vegitation, water in the resevoir and and various places in the river that runs through. All in all fantastic pig habitat and i saw so many fresh prints every morning *BUT* not one pig, I ran into two other hunters that have been hunting FHL for 20 years and the told me that in all the time they have come there they have not seen pigs when they were pig hunting, our consensus was that the FHL pigs must be nocturnal. What bothered me was that i came across *LOTS* of fresh prints and scat but *NO* rooting and no tree rubbings...whats up with that?

anyway 2 days out walking looking for pig beats any day at work. (pig or no pig)

I was also told that the prime TA is 29 (primitive weapons and walk in only) and bordering all private ranches. Anyway just wanted to share.

As i were leaving someone was skinning a bull elk (6X6) it was shoot in the gut and left, according to the FHL staff it had been dead for 4 hours when it was found and no one claimed it, what a waste, shooting such an animal and just leaving it.
