What area's can be hunted with rifles at FHL or can you hunt FHL with rifles?
Have anyone gone there recently and seen pigs or signs?
I was planning a trip up there next month.

As steve said, those areas are primitive weapon only. Also, Area 3 is archery only.

Primitive weapon???? With todays modern muzzleloaders and rifled shotguns, I don't know why they still classify those as primitive. They are very accurate and have good range. They might want to re-evaluate "primitive weapon"

I think area 7 is also shotgun only. But your best bet for rifle is 10-13 if you're hunting pigs. The best time for pigs at FHL is right after it rains and in the spring. When it rains all the pigs come out. and spring it's just obviouse. I've taken several hogs there. The smallest one I've taken was 120 lbs. If you are good with a shotgun I'de suggest area 29. Go in through the second entrance for 29 and 30. It's park and walk. Walk in and as soon as the dirt road curves to the right go about 50 yards and head into the brush on your left =. It's a pain in the ass to get in there but once you do I can pretty much garuntee you gets yourself a piggy. Also, some of the ranchers let their cows graze area 29 so if you see any one of them ask them if they've seen pigs. They're on horse back in that area all day and they will tell you where they will be and almost exactly what time. Also, check the cow pies for signs of pigs.

29 is also a good quail spot , so say you're hunting pigs in the morning and you don't get anything towards the afternoon it's pointless they'll never come out. Then you can switch to some bird hunting without going to the check station to change spots.

Rookies,

If area 10-13 and 24 are open and you can register before both areas are filled, you increase your chance with a rifle pig hunt. Always bring along your shotgun as you may want to switch to area 29 or 30. Lots of walking though. Good luck at FHL.

Sevook.. Area 7 is a rifle area also.. I've hunted there for many years now and though I don't hunt area 7 that much you can use your rifle there.

Rookies, there's a lot of good pig area's. 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10-13, 15, 16, 24, 27, 29, and 30 all have pigs. Some area's more then others. A buddy of mine got 2 pigs in area 24 during rifle season. In 2002 my dad, a friend, and I got one out of area 19 of all places during deer season. That was a big surprise to us. But there are pigs to be had. Just have to get out there and look for them.

I was looking at all the info for FHL from Jesses, and it doesn't have a link to print out the hunt permit. Anyone know why, it says you can download and print it out, but I can't find the link. Any ideas.

I'm seriously getting the itch to get out and do some hog hunting, anyone up for a hunt in late January or early February? I've never taken anything there, but use to go several times a year a long time ago.

Mel,
Go to www.liggett.army.mil and it will open up to the home page. At the home page scroll down a little bit & click on "hunting and fishing". And then click on the permit application. Lots of rains, green shoots, wallows, must be good for the piggies. Good luck & God Bless. larrysogla.

Here's a direct link to the FHL website. Select the hunting and fishing link and you can get to the app. Good luck Mel. Let me know when you're heading down.

Rookies, you can either get a two day pass or an annual pass and each person needs one, not each vehicle. Be sure you bring your photo id, car registration and proof of insurance. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Cheers,
Foo

Mel,

I thought you were gonna take your girlfriend and join BC and SierraExplorer at Lake Sonoma. Did you guys go? I might be going down to FHL sometimes early Feb if area 24 and 10/13 are open.

Thanks, I didn't see it

L2H, we never made it over to Lake Sonoma, still going to give it a try before the end of the hunts.

I'll let everyone know if I decide to head to FHL, maybe we can get a few of us together and do a JHO drive for those hogs.
