I finally ordered the Canon EOS 30D, with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 autofocus lens yesterday (should be here in the next few days). This is one of the few times in my life that I actually researched something before buying it... I went back and forth between the new Rebel and the new Sony A100, hopefully I made the right choice with the 30D. I feel like a kid does a few days before Christmas

Thanks guys, I decided to go with the Canon 300mm f/4 L IS with a 1.4 T/C for shooting wildlife (hope to have the lens in a couple of weeks)..... and sometime after that a tilt/angle lens for architecture. I'm glad I didn't go for the 5D, it would be a long time before I could afford any lenses... I wish I could find less expensive hobbies (lol).

Nice choice on the lens. please let us know what you think of it after you get some hands on time with it.
I know you have done this calculation already, but the 300 + 1.4x tele + 1.6x crop factor will give you 672mm. You can shoot big game (deer) with that kind of range out to 100 yards (and beyond) pretty good. If you get within 50 yards, you will be more than full frame.

On a side note (and kind of related), I visited the Smithsonian while in DC last week. In the Natural History Museum, they had 10 poster sized prints of wildlife. Many of the digital shots (probably 5-6 of them) were shot with a canon 10-D. Lenses used were 300, 400, and 500 primes. Some were used with extenders. But my point is, you will now have the tools to create some great/professional work.

That 300 f/4 is a great lens. You won't regret it. Just a little FYI, do some testing with the lens as soon as you get it to make sure you didn't get a lens that missed the quality test..

Zach, is that something that happens often with Canon lenses?

Paul, often enough that people talk about it on all the photo forums. Just do a search on FM or DPReview and you'll see what I mean. Not saying they have mass amounts of bad copies, but you don't want to one of the few when you are spending that kind of money.
