Well, today is the opener for Missouri’s firearms deer season. I am not a big firearms hunter, however I will get out a few days after the opening weekend. Monday will be my first day out but I will probably take my bow instead of my rifle. I will be hunting in Franklin County this year and it has the antler restrictions …finally! I hope that they continue it next year.

Has anyone had any luck so far?

Hey Stringshooter~
I spent both morning and afternoon on sat and sun hunting the opener. I seen 2 small bucks and one doe on sat morn. Sat afternoon I had sat on the edge of the timber where I arrowed the buck on Fri. I had a small spike and a young doe with a broken ankle hang'n me up for hours. I just had to sit there and not move, they would come close then start browsing away again, and just kept this up. Then a high 5 point, about 10" wide came out. He ran off the little spike, then began browsing in my direction. He walked right up to me, I am not kidding ! He was 10' from me, he put his head down and looked curiously at me, then jumped a bit, and then just trotted into the timber behind me. No snort'n, no flagg'n or anything. Then I seen a mature doe come out. This morning I just seen the gimpy doe, and that was it. This afternoon, I seen a 8 point that was very small in mass and height. He had a large body, but the tines were 2,3 and 4". and not wide at all. I passed on him, kinda lookin fer a wall hanger. Im off work 2 more days. Maybe the hunting pressure easing off will allow me to see something worth shoot'n. Good luck to you, whether ya gun or bow hunt ahve a great time and score!

I scored at 7:10am, opening morning. A large-bodied 7 point came to my Primo's Can-Call.

We have (had
<
) 2 large-bodied bucks on the property, and we decided to take 'em if we could. They're both 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 years old (at the very least), and their racks are itty-bitty. Probably a result from in-breeding.

A buddy took the other one, at 4pm that night. Another large-bodied buck, with what looked like a broken off beam on the right side. It had grown back, but was merely a stump.

I hated burning my buck tag on this buck. But hopefully it will benefit the herd, by removing their genes from the gene pool.

Either way ~ my freezer is full now...
