Pigs have been pretty scarce this year, in my little area. The winery up the river knocked the heck out them (depredation permit) earlier in the year. Been hearing a few here and there in the river, and seeing one every once in a while while deer hunting lately. Saw this guy at 400yds, was real tall, and about 200lbs. Looked like a good hog from far, but when I got to him, could see that his teeth were tiny. Also, my first kill with copper bullets. Exit hole was the same size as entry hole. I'm not to happy with the expansion of these copper bullets, but at least they shoot straight. I'm curious to see how they go through bone. Busted 2 ribs on this hog, but no big bones. Now, if I could only find that darn elusive A-zone buck

he only went 40 yds, broadside shot, on the money. If the shot was 6 or 8 inches back, he may have ran off. Also, not one drop of blood in that 40yds.

Good job.

Good shot placement, small exit hole, no blood trail. This is what I have experienced and many others are reporting.

Recognizing this as a problem is the first step, finding a solution is the next logical step.

What's the solution? Larger diameter bullets (i.e. .338 vs. 300), slower speeds? Lungs are filled with air, and I don't think they expand properly with a double lung shot. It's like shooting them with ball/FMJ ammo. For everyone who says shot placement is everything, would you hunt with ball/FMJ bullets?

7mm, Fed Triple shock 160gr.
This was a double lung shot, through a rib on both sides. I would think that would've opened that bullet up, but I guess not.

Nice hog. I'm new to the site, I've killed my last few hogs with little tiny 85grain Barnes bullets out of a .243
. Zero problems.

All were shot through both shoulders. Two exited, one lodged in off side shield. All traveled less than 30 yards with destroyed shoulders! Again, nice hog and nice site.

Maybe I'm missing the point but was someone comparing a FMJ and Barnes X bullet?

Nice hog, the solution Barns bullets work best at higer velocity. Barns recomends dropping bullet weight 15 to 20gr from lead core bullets. I shoot lighter bullets at near max the group better and expand.

Nice! sucks the winery has taken out a lot of hogs but not much can be done about that. Just curious but how thick was the layer of fat on that guy? I have noticed that a lot of the times the fat layer will close up the bullet holes causing very little blood flow from the wound.

My copper bullet looked like a howitzer had hit him. Devestating.

private land. There is an apricot orchard in the background of the pic, that doesn't get harvested anymore. On good years, as the fruit drops, all you hear is the chomping of apricots and pits.... marinating from the inside out
