whew!!

just pulled in the driveway from my first pig hunt. I went with Bob Larsen from Hillside Hog Haven (Sonoma county) which is archery only. First let me say that Bob knows his pigs, I definately learned from this trip. Saw a pig within the first 45 minutes of the hunt, and made a bad shot at her and lost her (i hate that). Moving and grunting targets tend to accelerate the heart rate more so than a 3D target, yep...another lame excuse.  Then saw a big mean boar that  got a whiff of us and bolted. Anyway, after 6 hours of walking and stalking I drilled one. photos will be up soon, and the shot was not perfect...but we retrieved her early in the morning. I have never hunted pigs before, and I was kinda using deer hunting methods. Bob explained that pigs need to be hunted completely different.

Great experience. But if you are not in shape, you will not enjoy your hunt ( I can not emphasize this enough). The hills are steep and the pigs are smart...and Bob is a serious guide that will find them for you.

Rwlittle, congratulations.  I was wondering what hunting techniques you used while hunting.  The few times I have hunted pigs, it has been exactly like how I hunt deer and that is spot and stalk.

How did Bob explain hunting pigs?  How did you hunt?   I am always open to learning.

Thanks
Bill

Bill:  One tidbit I picked up is that pigs usually don't change their direction of movement when on the run unless something causes them to.  Theorectically, you have a good chance of cutting them off ahead of them. Also, if your hunting where there are grazing cattle, the trails going straight over hills are usually pig trails since cattle almost never move straight up or down grades.

Congrats, RW!

Ain't it a thrill to fill the freezer with meat?  I haven't tried bowhunting yet, although I keep toying with the idea of buying a recurve and learning to shoot it.  I think taking a pig with a bow is a pretty cool accomplishment.  Well, so is taking a deer or an elk, for that matter...  but you know what I mean.
