I have to say my first experience at Tejon will be one for the ages. Also everybody who was there were class acts and a wealth of knowledge. I want to thank Eric for sharing some of his Elk burger and Pork Sausages, very good. And the Carne Asada at 1am hit the spot also.

To start things off my Dad and I hit the roads around 2pm friday afternoon after the orintation. This outing was more so to familarize ourselves with the ranch and find a good spot for Saturday. Pretty much from 2pm to 630pm we saw a lot of cows, sat on trail for a little bit but nothing showed up. We headed back to camp to drive the main road, aroun 7:15 I spotted a pig crossing the hill side on the opposite canyon. I got out and started classin the canyon, saw 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8.... They kept popping out the the brush moving up the side of the hill. I ranged them at 640yds. I grabbed my rifle and said what the hell there was time left. Headed down the side of the hill to see how close I could get. Ended up sliding about 100yds down to a nice open area. There was 1 nice size hog standing broadside grazing on the hill. I ranged him at 436, by this time it was about 740. Looking at my surroundings and the time plus the distance equaled me walking back up the hill and thinking of how I was going to be on the top of that canyon in the morning.

We headed out around 430 saturday morning and found a road the would take us to the canyon. But we ended up inbetween the 2 hills in a creek bed. Nice area but way to many skeeters. Long story short that morning spotted 5 pigs on the same hill heading up the hill to where I wanted to be. Tried to close the gap but 4 legs move faster up hill than 2. So we headed back to camp around 1pm. Pretty tired from hiking up and down all morning.

For the evening hunt we found a "road" off the main road that would take us down to the creek bed. We found a nice spot where we could glass the opposing hill side where the hogs had been. I picked out a few spots and ranged them at 160 to 260yds. I was pretty happy with the distance. Pretty much from 4pm to 7pm the only thing moving were the skeeters. After 2 hours of fighting them off we headed back up the road to my truck. I was kinda pissed that nothing was moving so I would take a few steps and look back at the hill side. The second time I did there was nice sow standing broadside just looking in our direction. I quickly knelt to a knee and ranged her, 208yds well in range for my Savage 308. I had it dialed at 100yds so I put the crosshairs just below her back inline with her shoulder and squeezed one off. There was a slight pause so I figured I put a good shot on her. But then she took off, I racked another and fired missing just behind her, fired again and missed below her. I need more practice on moving targets. But after about 60yds she started up the hill then stopped and fell backwards, she was DOWN!!.

Here comes all the fun. I spotted her at 724, after walking back down the road and along the creek and back up the other hill, my Dad who is 67 found the blood trail. Good thing he did because I was way off. Found her just before 8. Rolled her down the hill, it's amazing how much speed they can pick up. Her a splash and started back down the hill. My dad was on the radio seeing if anybody was in the area to help. We got her gutted and attempted to start dragging her but that was not going to happen. I am now going to invest in a frame pack. Got back to Camp, russelled up Phil and Sol and headed back down the road. Phil made quick work and had her head off and in two pieces. I believe onetrack loaned us the other pack (thank you) Phil tied up the pig to each pack, I shouldered one and he the other. Sol and my Dad manned the lights and we headed out of the creek. We got back to Petunia which made it 1/4 of the way down the road before the grass got too tall. Through the packs on the rack. Phil was a madman in reverse driving back up the road.

Got back to camp around 1230 and started skinning the pieces, and shooting the shit with a cup of fine tequila that Phil was gracious enough to share. After sharing some war stories we headed off to bed around 2am.

Awsome hunt and great people. Phil thanks again for everything.

Jason, nice work on that hog!

It was definitely a haul getting out of there, but I bet you'd agree that it was worth the pain! Glad you and your pop had a good time. Next time, let's get one for both of you.
