I have my first hog trip coming this weekend with Camp 5 Outfitters. I will be hunting with my son who just turned 12 last week. I noticed that there might be rain in the forecast and was wondering how that might affect the hunting. Also any other last minute advice for novice hog hunters (especially equipment issues with the rain) would be appreciated. I am really crossing my fingers for a great experience for my son.

Thanks, Mike

Congrats on the first hunt with your son Mike, it should be a blast. Assuming you have hunted big game in the past is is pretty simlar. Pigs have a great nose and see movement. I have also found them to be pretty noisy when walking and feeding and I have been able to get away with more noise and movement than with deer. If you are going guided listen to the guide and you should be fine. If pigs are around, it is not too hard to find sign they have been there, they tear the place up !!! Another item to remember is that the vitals aremore forward than on deer. A shot that might be a perfect double lung on deer may only be guts on a pig.

This page is a good one to read before the trip!

Here is a picture (from the link above) to show vital placement. I find it to be pretty accurate from the ones I have "inspected" on the inside.

So far it looks like just a chance...With it cool and wet from all the recent storms, I'm thinking those hogs will be out in the open.

Clothes wise, dry shoes - the grass and ground will be wet and muddy, and not having waterproof footwear gets to sucking pretty fast.

Good luck and take lots of pix.

Good luck with Camp 5 outfitters. I have heard nothing but good things about there outfit. I was enroute to hunt a certain ranch and drove right by Doug Roth who runs that operation he had clients in the back of his rig and they were headed out right at last light. The area where his clients stay is awesome in itself. I hear he lets you shoot varmits if you tag out early. Give a full report when you get back. Goodluck and dont forget the pics...
