I wanted to share the first wild boar that I took with my son while hunting with Twisselman Outfitters. I had hunted many times on public land without success and with my son along I was hoping to increase my odds by hunting on private land. We got up early on the Saturday and barely made it up a muddy hill via 4WD, overlooking a large grazing area used for cattle. We could see a group of 20 pigs about a 1000 yards away and in speaking with the guides, we were between their feeding ground and bedding grounds and that they would eventually move towards. We then spotting a boar moving towards us and we quickly positioned ourselves to intercept. At about a hundred yards, face on, the boar stopped as he saw me, however instead of running off, he decided to angle to his right to run around us. At about 50 yards and directly broadside to me, I fired the 308 killing the 200lbs plus boar at once. The handloaded 165 grain Sierra Gameking hit the pig in the shoulder fragmenting as the bits of lead passed through boars vitals. Moving forward I am going to use a stouter bullet choice to avoid picking out bits of lead from the meat.
We had a great time and while the private route is more expensive I think it was worth it.
