TOP PICKS

• SACRAMENTO RIVER, Sacramento – Sturgeon fishing has broken wide open along the Sacramento River all the way to Tisdale. Because of all the debris in the water, it's advisable to do your fishing from shore until the river settles back down. Freeport, the Hog Farm, Bryte Beach, Verona, Knight's Landing and Tisdale were all hot spots last week. Ghost shrimp and pileworms were the baits of choice, either fished by themselves or in combination.

• AMERICAN RIVER – Bright steelhead continued to provide decent action for die-hard steelheaders last week, and while this latest flurry of fresh steelies has smaller fish on average (4 to 5 pounds), they are spunky. The water was murky, so best bets for a hookup or two were drifting a nightcrawler and bead, or a small piece of roe with a bit of yarn. There are still quite a few spawners and downrunners, so anglers should use care in releasing them to make another trip upriver. (Remember, only one hatchery steelhead, as identified by a clipped adipose fin, may be kept).

• DELTA REGION, SACRAMENTO RIVER side – As the waters muddied up, the sturgeon bite improved. They are on the move, feeding, and can be found throughout the system. The outgoing tides will be good times to target these fish with a combination of grass and ghost shrimp.

• CAMANCHE LAKE – While crappie and black bass are showing, trout continued to get the most attention. Trout trollers were the ones finding crappie and bass attached to their offerings. The crappie were better found with live minnows or red and white mini-jigs; top spots were the narrows and the mouth of the Camanche Arm. Shore trouters found the best action, particularly for big fish, with 11- and 10-pounders caught on the north side with Power Bait. Trollers do best on cloudy days, with limits common for those pulling floating Rapalas in gold/black or firetiger. The lake level was on a slow rise.

• LAKE OROVILLE – The lake came up 32 feet last week, and both the Lime Saddle and lower Spillway ramps were back in the water. This relieved a shortage of safe launching for boaters. The lower Bidwell ramp may be operable by the weekend because of additional rain. Bass, catfish and coho were hitting, with the catfish responding well to the runoff. Catches of cats were made at the Lime Saddle area on cut mackerel. Bassers scored on a minnow/bobber in the Middle Fork in 20 feet of water. Coho were caught on anchovies at the dam at 40 to 50 feet.

SACRAMENTO VALLEY

• FEATHER RIVER – Some fresh steelhead moved up into the Low Flow Section. Anglers caught small steelies, according to Craig Bentley of Huntington Outdoor Sports. Count on murky water. The best action was on night-crawlers and a bead.

• FOLSOM LAKE – Both bass and bass fishermen were kept off-balance because of the series of storms. A few bass were being caught on plastic worms drop-headed or drop-shotted, and a few more on jigs in darker colors. Best advice: Fish slow and forget trying to find a reaction bite. Trout fishing was best from the bank at Granite Bay, but the fish were mostly planters.

• SACRAMENTO RIVER, Redding – Even the river flowing through Redding, which rarely is off-color, was muddy over the weekend. Trout lovers should wait for the river to clear.

DELTA

• SAN JOAQUIN RIVER – It will be challenging out there for bass anglers because of poor visibility and cold waters. Bass pro Mike Andrews from the Hook, Line, and Sinker said flooded islands/ponds, like Big Break, Franks Tract or Mildred Island, are where they will be headed for spawning. Good areas to target this week: staging areas adjacent to the flooded islands/ponds with jigs like Bobby-D's in black and blue, worked in the deeper waters around flooded islands.
