TOP PICKS
• SACRAMENTO RIVER, Tisdale – Striper fishing was definitely the best of the summer so far last week between Knights Landing and Tisdale. There were still lots of shakers around, but the percentage of keepers was up significantly, and some fish weighing over 20 pounds were caught.
• LAKE PARDEE – Trout fishing has picked up. Trollers are doing best on the south end of the lake with a threaded nightcrawler behind dodgers or flashers at 17 to 25 feet. Shore anglers are doing best on the trout at Stony Creek Landing with white Power Eggs or inflated 'crawlers. Most have given up on the kokanee, as they're small: 10 to 12 inches.
• DELTA, SACRAMENTO RIVER side – Sturgeon fishing on the Delta remained productive, even with the warmer summer temperatures and last week's larger minus morning tides, which caused the best action for anglers to be on the afternoon outgoing tides. Delta striper anglers also fought big tide swings, but next week should be better.
• DELTA, SAN JOAQUIN RIVER side – Stick with topwater tackle, as that is what stripers have been hitting on as they forage for shad throughout the system. Swimbaits in shad or lighter colors are also finding scattered stripers as they are on the move looking for bait.
• BODEGA BAY – Beautiful weather and flat seas this past week. The New Sea Angler went out five times this past week, and everyone aboard caught full limits of rockfish each day, plus tons of undersized lingcod. In fact, on Friday's trip to Point Reyes, there were 34 anglers who caught 34 limits of rockfish, plus two lings to 14 pounds – and believe it or not, they released 62 undersized lings.
SACRAMENTO VALLEY
• AMERICAN RIVER – The next two months are prime time for striped bass on the American. Success won't be measured in numbers but in the experience of being almost alone on the river early in the morning, except for deer, turkeys and the other critters that make the American River home. But there is a decent chance of hooking a striped bass or two on everything from Pencil Poppers on the surface to crawdads soaked on the bottom. Trolling Yo-Zuris and Bombers in the lower end of the river, especially at night, can be effective, too.
• FEATHER RIVER – Fishing for striped bass was very good last week until flows were temporarily cut. They're back up again, but the fluctuation put down the bite, at least temporarily. The mouth of the Yuba and Bear rivers, and the Rock Dam were a couple of the better spots. The occasional steelhead was being caught in the Low Flow Section early in the morning on nightcrawlers and nymphs.
• FOLSOM LAKE – The lake is still dropping rapidly, and bass have moved to deeper water over submerged rock piles and rocky points. Except for a brief period of possible topwater and ripbait action, most of the catches, such as they are, are being made on plastics worked deep and slow. Try drop-shotting and dartheading Robo-Worms in Aaron's Magic and Morning Dawn. Not many trout and king salmon are being caught, and not many anglers are trying, but they are occasionally being rewarded by a 4-pound landlocked king salmon or 15-inch rainbow on Apexes, Kastmasters and Needlefish fished behind dodgers between 35 and 60 feet deep. Try fishing from in front of the dam toward Brown's Ravine.
• SACRAMENTO RIVER, Sacramento – Striped bass action perked up a small notch, with a few stripers caught around the mouth of the American River and the I Street Bridge trolling with Yo-Zuris, Rebels and Bombers. Catfish were the most productive species, however, with Lisbon Slough, the Port of West Sacramento and Sutter Bypass the most productive spots, and minnows, crawdads, clams, mackerel and sardines the most effective baits.
