NOTE: Saturday marks the opening weekend of stream trout fishing. The Department of Fish and Game has stocked almost all open waters with catchable rainbows.
SACRAMENTO RIVER, Sacramento - Fishing for stripers picked up last week. Broadway Bait and Tackle reported a 35-pound striper and many schoolie-sized fish of 3 to 8 pounds. The fish were caught on a mix of lures and bait, with bloodworms, pileworms and live minnows top choices, followed by sardines or anchovies fished on the bottom. Trollers did well using diving plugs.SACRAMENTO RIVER, Verona - If you picked the right time and the right place, striper action was good. As schools move through there were fish - but then came lulls. Drifting live minnows worked, as did bottom-fishing with bait like pileworms, anchovies or sardines. Best area was from Meridian Bridge to halfway between Tisdale and Knights Landing.BERKELEY - Live bait is available at K Dock from bait specialist Jim Holloway. Saturday's anglers reported good action on party boats seeking halibut and a few stripers. On board the California Dawn, the switch from trolling to live bait boosted Sunday's score to 26 flatties and three bass for 18 anglers, that action coming from Paradise and Berkeley Flats. The Goldeneye 2000 ran a live bait trip on Saturday and scored 18 halibut and two stripers for 19 anglers.DONNER LAKE - Mackinaw action picked up and browns started to show, too. Keith Kerrigan with Sierra Anglers Guide Service in Truckee had clients catching both. Donner action is on the upswing.
