Salmon are on the move; bear season is off to a good start
Lower Peninsula

SOUTHEASTERN LP

Lake St. Clair
Perch fishing is heating up on Lake St. Clair. Yellowbellies up to 10 inches long are hitting minnows in front of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. The best action is coming in 14 to 16 feet of water. Anglers have to sort through them to get to the bigger fish, but the perch are there. Smallmouth bass also are hitting in the same area. A few walleyes are being picked up by anglers trolling nightcrawler harnesses in the channel by the St. Clair Light and by the whether marker on the Canadian side of the lake. Anglers jigging in the Detroit River are taking a few walleyes, too. Muskies up to 30 pounds are hitting large plugs on the Canadian side of the lake at the mouth of the Thames River.

Irish Hills Area
Fishing pressure has been light around Irish Hills. Anglers that are getting out are catching good numbers of bluegills on most all the lakes in the area including Wamplers, Sand and Devils. Wax worms and crickets both are producing. Early goose season started slow, but gained speed.

Monroe Area
Perch fishing is heating up in Lake Erie. Anglers report a good bite at the end of the Raisin River buoys and about a mile and a half out in front of Stony Point. Anglers fishing minnows in 18 feet of water report a pretty good bite. Early goose season was slow.

SOUTHWESTERN LP

Coldwater Area
Bluegills are hitting on Randall, North, Cemetery, and Marble lakes. The best action has been coming to anglers fishing crickets and wax worms, 4 feet off bottom in 8 to 12 feet of water. ’Gills and a few bass also are hitting on Coldwater Lake. Early goose season was slow.

St. Joseph Area
Salmon fishing has been slow on Lake Michigan at St. Joseph. A few walleyes are hitting in the St. Joseph River. Good action is being reported by anglers fishing around the Mottville Dam and in the Bristol area. Crawlers and minnows have been producing the best results. Early goose season was slow.

Kalamazoo Area
Shore anglers in Lake Michigan are taking a fair number of salmon and an occasional steelhead off the pier at South Haven. Spoons have been producing the lion’s share of the action. Inland, anglers fishing on Gun Lake report good success on panfish and bass. Bass are hitting rubber worms, while wax worms are taking good numbers of bluegills in 10 to 15 feet of water. Early goose season was pretty good.

Saginaw Bay Area
Perch fishing has been good in Lake Huron’s Saginaw Bay. Anglers fishing in 12 to 20 feet of water between Linwood and Pinconning report pretty good success. A few walleyes are hitting in 18 to 22 feet of water off the Pinconning Bar.

Baldwin Area
Fly fishermen targeting salmon report seeing a little spawning activity on the Pere Marquette River and the South Branch of the Pere Marquette. Egg patterns and nymphs are taking fair numbers of fish, and anglers tossing spinners and plugs report fair action below Custer. Early goose season was fair at best.

Grand Haven Area
Salmon fishing has been great on Lake Michigan at Grand Haven. Fish are moving in toward shore in spurts, and anglers fishing off the piers are doing well.

Ludington Area
Salmon fishing has been good at Ludington with fish pouring into the Pere Marquette River. Pere Marquette Lake also is full of fish. Spoons and J-plugs are both taking fish in the lake, and anglers are throwing spawn and spinners in the river. Inland, bluegills are feeding up and keeping anglers busy on Hamlin Lake. The fish are holding in 10 to 14 feet of water and hitting wax worms and leaf worms. Early goose season was slow.

Caseville Area
Perch fishing has been good in Lake Huron. Anglers report a good bite on minnows in 13 feet of water off Sand Point. A good bite also has been reported in 50 feet of water in front of Sleeper State Park. Walleye fishing has been slow because most anglers are concentrating on the perch bite. The early goose season was slow.

Harbor Beach Area
Salmon fishing has been good on Lake Huron, but angler pressure has been light. Fish in the 20-pound range are starting to show up. Fish are hitting in 40, 60, and 80 feet of water throughout the front of the harbor. Hoochie Mommas and flies are attracting a decent brown trout bite in 55 feet of water. Walleyes are scattered. Perch are hitting south of Harbor Beach. Early goose season was slow.

Salmon fishing is improving on Lake Huron. Anglers are catching fish inside the harbor and outside the wall. Goose season has been pretty good for hunters who did their homework and have access to active feeding fields.

Vassar Area
Fishing has been hit or miss around Vassar. A few bluegills are hitting on Murphy Lake but action has been fair at best. Cass River anglers also are taking ’gills and a few black crappies. Early goose season was slow; a lot of the local water holes are dry.

Beulah Area
Salmon fishing has been good in Lake Michigan within a half-mile of shore. Spoons and plugs are taking good numbers of fish. Salmon fishing has been slow on the Platte and Betsie rivers. Salmon are starting to move upstream in light numbers. Early goose season was slow. Grouse season should be fair — about like last year.

Cadillac Area
Panfish action has been pretty good on lakes Mitchell and Cadillac, but angler pressure has been light. Everyone seems to be chasing salmon. Early goose season was slow. Grouse season should be fair.

Fishing has been decent for bass on Rose Lake, and a few walleyes are hitting, too. Pike and bluegill fishing are heating up on all the inland lakes in the area.

Grayling Area
Walleye and perch fishing has been fair to good on Lake Margrethe. Walleyes are hitting crawler harnesses in 4 feet of water. Perch are hitting crawlers and minnows in 30 feet of water. Wax worms and teardrops also are producing. Early goose season was decent, but hunting pressure was light. Small game season should be good with decent numbers of grouse and of squirrels in the area.

Higgins Lake Area
Perch fishing has been pretty good on Higgins Lake. Anglers fishing minnows and wigglers in 90 feet of water are taking good numbers of fish. A few lake trout also are hitting. Spoons trolled through the deeper holes are producing the best results.

Harrisville Area
Salmon fishing is heating up on Lake Huron. Anglers casting 3/4-ounce casting spoons inside the harbor are doing really well. Boaters trolling J-plugs out to 30 feet of water also are picking up fish. Early goose season was decent.

Gaylord Area
Fishing has been slow on Otsego Lake. A few small walleyes are being caught, but hardly any anglers are getting after them. Anglers fishing on East and West Twin lakes report a fair walleye bite. Early goose season was slow. Bear season got off to a good start.

Oscoda Area
Salmon fishing has been good in Lake Huron. Lakers and kings are hitting in 80 to 100 feet of water. Mature kings are showing up at the pier heads, and anglers fishing with J-plugs, spoons, and eggs are all taking fish. Salmon are moving in and out of the Au Sable River. Cooler weather and some cold rain will trigger the spawning runs. Early goose season was slow, but grouse season should be decent. Bear hunters report a good start to the season.

Glennie Area
Bluegills and smallmouth bass are hitting in the Five Channels Pond, Cook Pond, and Loud Pond. Bluegills are hitting wax worms in the deepest holes they can find. Anglers drifting nightcrawler harnesses for walleyes are catching ’gills, too, although the walleye fishing has been slow. Early goose season was slow with few birds in the area. Bear hunters are reporting good success.

Tawas Area
Salmon fishing continues to gain steam on Lake Huron. Very good action is coming to anglers trolling Dodgers and flies, and spoons in 60 to 70 feet of water. Anglers fishing off the piers are picking up a few fish, especially in the mornings as the mature salmon are moving toward shore. A good perch bite is being reported from anglers fishing in 30 feet of water at Au Gres.

Cedarville Area
A few salmon are hitting in Lake Huron at Cedarville. The best action is coming to anglers trolling spoons in 40 to 100 feet of water, 20 to 70 feet down. Perch fishing has been slow. Early goose season was pretty good, and the bear season is off to a good start.

Drummond Island Area
Salmon are hitting in the St. Marys River with good bites being reported by anglers trolling spoons and J-plugs in 50 feet of water near the light house and the ferry boat. Smallmouth bass fishing has been good all around the island. A fair number of perch are being caught in Scotts, Maxton, and Whiteny bays, and a few walleyes are hitting nightcrawler harnesses in Scotts Bay. Early goose season was fair. Bear season has been very good so far.

Fishing has been good in the St. Marys River with lots of kings in the river. Anglers trolling J-plugs are enjoying pretty good success. Early goose season was good. Grouse season should be good, too. Bear hunters are enjoying a very good season.

Grand Marais Area
Coho salmon are starting to move in toward shore in Lake Superior. Anglers fishing in the surf at the mouth of the Big Two-Hearted River report fair success. Warm weather has kept the heavy runs at bay. Bear hunting has been pretty good.

Perch and walleyes are hitting on Lake Independence. Minnows are taking perch in 20 feet of water and walleye anglers are trolling crawler harnesses with pretty good success. Lake trout are still hitting in Lake Superior. Early goose season was slow. Bear hunting season is off to a good start.

Curtis Area
Good numbers of perch are keeping anglers busy on Big Manistique Lake, but pike and walleye fishing have been slow. Bass anglers report a good bite from both largemouth and smallmouth on South Manistique and Big Manistique lakes. Bear season is off to a good start, but early goose season was slow.

Salmon are starting to move into the Manistique River, and anglers casting spoons are taking a fair number of fish. Boat anglers trolling in Lake Michigan off the mouth of the river are enjoying pretty good success. Bear hunters got off to a good start. Early goose season was fair.

Escanaba Area
High winds have kept fishing pressure to a minimum on Lake Michigan’s Little Bay de Noc. Anglers who are able to get out report that a fair number of walleyes are being caught on nightcrawler harnesses trolled off the mouth of the Bark River and the Cedar River. A few salmon are starting to show up in the Ford and Escanaba rivers, but the best runs are still a few weeks away. Pike and smallmouth bass fishing have been very good throughout the bay.

WESTERN UP

Bergland Area
Fishing has been slow on Lake Gogebic. A few walleyes are hitting nightcrawler harnesses in 25 feet of water in the main lake. Early goose season was slow. Bear season got off to a slow start with very windy weather hampering hunter success.
