Dad has a cow tag starting the 20th. No snow yet over here to bring them down. The guys who hunted the spike season that just ended didn't do very well. Are you seeing any over on the west side of the unit?
Well, we got er' done. Yesterday we glassed up a herd on a high ridge just to far for dad to hike and further than I could pack. Woke up to snow this morning and headed to a new area where we saw good sign on some trails while cutting firewood. Never made it there. We turned off to check out some low country on a hunch. Low clouds and snow made for poor visibility and I wasn't expecting much but we spotted elk skylined on a ridge. They crossed a valley and went out of sight behind a hill about 2 miles away. We drove to the base of the hill and I had dad wait in the truck while I climbed up to see if I could spot them. Just as I was cresting the hill I saw them 150yds ahead. Almost walked right into them. A cow was looking right at me but with the poor visibility didn't make me out. I hunkered down and backed out of there and got dad. I wasn't sure they would still be there but they were. The poor visibility actually helped us get close. He picked out a nice yearling. I got her packed out in 4 loads. Glad to get it done, below 0temps forecast this week. Dad turns 84 in February.
The year he hit 80 he got his buck muley, cow elk and buck antelope. After that he told me he was pretty well satisfied and thought he was done hunting. He sat out a couple years but started to get the urge back. Last year I took 3 nephews to Wyo for antelope and when we got back with the stories of that trip he wanted to go some more. We went to Wyo in October and he took a buck and doe antelope.
I'll keep him going as long as I can. It's just payback.
Beandog, we are getting hit with our 1st major snow of the winter. We have about 10", that usually means Halfway has about 20". I'll bet the wolf sightings will really spike now. The coyotes and cougars are bad enough here but the wolves will be devastating to game herds.
