my wife has recently started hunting and aquired a taste for wild hog. she made mention to me that we were out of pork and i couldnt resist.

while i hunt hogs on public land during deer season they are closed the rest of the year but considered tresspass animals on private property and can be hunted without liscence or tags throughout the year.we found this guy who will supply and handle dogs and let us kill hogs for less than we can buy them for.

we started out our last huntat 6 in the morning sitting in a box blind.we sat in the box until 9 and didnt even hear a grunt so we turned out the dogs. we have really had alot of rain this year and the water was standing very deep, over our heads in some places so it was hard for the dogs to get on a scent.

near the property line the farmer across the way had some domestic sows that were in heat and the wild pigs were tearing up the fence around the pen they were in.we decided to drop the dogs there and imedietley they jumped a hog but it was off with no one seeing anything but bushes moving. the dogs bayed it up several times but it would break before we got there and finally lost it. it only took a few minutes for them to chase up another one but it still took about an hour to keep it bayed untill we could get to it. when we got there we found that the dogs had caught it and while this wasnt what my wife had in mind it was the kind of hog we were looking for.the man with the dogs grabbed this pig by its back legs and drug it out of the bushes to get the dogs off for her to shoot. she shoots a 35 whelen and we all wanted to see what kind of hole it would put in the pig but at the range we were at she opted for the 9mm under the shoulder at about a foot. this was her first kill and i was a little unsure of her feelings but she thought it was fun.

next hog was for my 11 year old son. he had killed a hog before and has been hunting a few years. it took a little to get on another pig but man when we did!!! this pig went 200 directions for about 2 hours and finally came out in an opening at full speed. both my son and then me got a running shot and both missed the pig took off for the water so in we went behind it.my wife said no way she was getting in that but once we heard them bay the pig on a little island she and the video camera were right there with me and our son was up ahead.he was a real trooper and looked like something out of a veitnam movie he was neck deep in water and had my ruger above his head. just as he got over to some dry land SPLASH down he went completely submerging my rifle.
i yelled to him to check the barrell for mud and he was after the dogs again. my wife was fighting with the water but hanging in there by the time i got to where my son fell dang it i went down too.now i got a muddy semi auto to clean. the pig broke bay and was about 5 feet from us splashing in whe water trying to get back across with the dogs the boy and the guide in hot pusuit. i took my time with my wife and as soon as we got back over to the other side our son shot, the dogs stopped barking and all went quiet.my wife was pretty mad since she went in the water to get his kill shot on video.when we got there we found out he made a shot at about 45 yards RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES( sometimes its better to be lucky than good)after all the fun we were only 50 yards from the truck so we told him he had to drag it out by himself.we were really only kidding him but then the dogs bayed another pig quick so he said dad go get it ill meet you at the truck.

my wife said she wasnt going back in the water to see me shoot a hog so she went with the boy back to the truck.we took off after this pig and when we got to the water we saw the dog sitting and he looked at us like where have you guys been. we didnt see the pig but the dog kept looking in the bushes so we looked closer and this huge pig was just laying there and i wasnt sure it was alive.when i saw breathing i shot and half of this pig took off. we realized that this was a baby and it ran around and bellied up to momma even though mamma was dead.the dog wouldnt grab it because it didnt realize it was a second pig and if we shot it with the 35 whelen it would turn inside out. finally kenny told me if i would stay put and make it look at me he would go around and grab it.when he got it i stabbed it and man was that a great BBQ.
