? for the experienced hog hunters

I post alot on the whitetail forum and would like to ask y'all a question if you don't mind.

PA native that has moved to northern SC here.
I have found a population of hogs in the mountains of upper SC and lower NC.I do not have dogs but want to hunt these hogs while learning the area.The mountains are steep and the terrain is rough.

My question is this,as a solo hunter who cannot use bait,can I take some of these hogs with lures and calls?
I've located a few lure makers and some calls from Cajun Slick.
I can also use an electronic caller.
Any recommendations on lures or calls?

Also,around Augusta,GA I've located some landowners who have damage from hogs and want them removed.

Can I take hogs with these tatics?
Any books or videos where I can learn more about hunting hogs?

Any info will be appreciated and please accept my thanks.

Gene,

Personally, I have never called in a hog using a "Caller". Most of my hunting is "Spot & Stalk" or using "Dogs". You mentioned you located some landowners who have suffered damage to there crops that hogs have caused. I think that is your best bet. Contact the land owner and ask them as many questions as you can. Ask them where they see them (Sunrise & Sunset) ask them where they see the most sign, routes of travel, etc. If a landowner is gonna give you permission to hunt on his/her property, consider yourself lucky. DONT forget to offer them some sort of gift. Offer some (Cleaned) game or if they are not interested in that, something that shows you are appreciative that they let you hunt on there land (Case of wine, etc)...As far as videos go..I have a few videos on hog hunting by "Guy Nixon"...they are pretty informative and he does a good job in relaying his tatics on hog hunting. I found my videos on Ebay, or you can do a search on the internet for a series of his videos..Hope this helps.

I've grunted at pigs nearby to calm them down when they heard me stalking up. Never grunted one up though. As far as scents, it kind of like deer scents, some guys swear by them and some guys say the animal walked right on by.

HOGHUNTER714's idea about the farmers is a good one. They should know the when and where and then you can set up an ambush. The hard part about hunting pigs on public land is finding them if you can't use dogs.

Hey Mailman,

Ive had pretty good luck with a couple different calls, but never used any lures for hogs. I use a grunting hog call that sounds like feeding hogs when they are rooting around, and I also use a squeler call. The squeler imitates a hurt pig or a lost baby pig, this one realy works if you have spooked hogs or have shot at them. I have used this call many times after shooting a hog that was in a group,,, the other pigs will scatter in all directions but this squeler will bring the rest back. It is kinda like a distress call for help.

Check out Haydels Game calls they have some hog calls. Ive used t he "Boss Hawg call ..good luck... also check out Hog Hunter Magazine,, they have a web site....

Haven't tried this yet, but will do so this coming spring; I've heard that coyote calls work pretty well (that hogs will come into the call of a squealing rabbit). I'll post up the results sometime in March after I try it, or, give it a try if you want, ya never know till you do.....

If you can find a waterhole or a marshy area,thats a good spot to start. they like the good black dirt and muck. I've found them several times near the water.
