Just found out that I got a tag for the Fort Hunter Liggett Antlerless, Period 2 hunt. I've hunted pig at FHL several times, but never elk. In fact this is my first Ca elk hunt.

So does anyone have any info to offer? Do they allow a "helper" to join you? How many elk hunters do they put into one area? Is the orientation meeting any help, or just a bureaucratic requirement?

Thanks for any info,

Neil

SWEET !!!! Bubba drew that tag 2 or 3 years ago and I'm sure when he reads this post he can fill you in on some of the process and how useful it is. Congrats on the tag.

Neil,

Congratulations! Did you get one of the military tags, or one of the general public tags? I'm still waiting to find out if the military draw results are out yet. I got drawn for a spike bull tag a few years ago and it was a great hunt. I don't know how they run the hunt now, but when I hunted it went something like this:

1. Mandatory orientation meeting the night before opening day. They went through all of the generic base rules, had a video on the DFG Tule Elk restoration program and actually provided some good information about movement patterns they had observed the elk in recently.

2. Each hunter was allowed one assistant to help with game recovery, glassing, whatever. Only the tag holder could carry a weapon.

3. The hunting areas where the elk primarily hang out were blocked off for elk hunters only. Elk hunters could hunt all of the elk only areas without having to re-register at the check station.

4. Only elk were allowed to be hunted in the elk only areas (i.e. you couldn't shoot a pig if you saw one when elk hunting.)

There were 10 hunters for the period I hunted and it never seemed crowded.

When I hunted, the cows all seemed to be in herds of 20 to 100 with one or two big bulls and they weren't real hard to find. The non-herd bulls were spread pretty much everywhere else in the elk areas in small bachelor groups of 3 - 6.

Again, I can't speak to how things are now, especially with all of the changes the FHL hunting program has gone through in the past few years, but every one involved from the base and DFG did everything possible to ensure an enjoyable, safe and productive hunt. If you have any other questions send me an email through JHO and I'll tell you what I can.

Navy Hunter,

Thanks for the info! That is exactly what I was looking for. Sorry I ddin't reply sooner; we just got back from a vacation.

I was hoping to have a pig tag with me just in case, but considering how many pigs I've seen at FHL (outside of the blackpowder area) I don't think I'm giving up much.

My tag fees are going out today, and as soon as I can get a mail order, the FHL pass application goes in the mail.

Thanks again for the info,

Neil

Richard,

Wish I could. Would love to see that part of the world someday. Best luck and stay safe.
