I was there last weekend. We hunted 19 on both sides of the river. Lots of turkeys, even had a tom gobbling, but was with my nephews and brother and couldn't go after him. Some fairly fresh rooting but no pigs seen. Lots of ticks, and poison oak everywhere, but I got lucky - no bites and no rash.

Nuttin till about noon when a couple came in behind me and said some guy in 15 had shot at some hogs and run them into the north end of 19. I tried to get in there in the morning but the mudhes were bad. As i was exchanging my shotgun for my rifle to go look for them pigs a gobbler sounded off right below me by the river. I grabbed my shotgun and went after him. I was able to pull him down to the river but he wouldnt cross it and the river is too deep to wade or ford in vehicle, the warden went across but it was one of them hold your breath moments. Going out for evening hog hunt now, back after them turkey birds in the morning. Pat, im in a brown dodge quad cab. I went by the campground to see if you were there but the old marine guy said he didnt think you were camped in the back. 951-314-5837. Im staying at gibb hall by the hacienda.

Jesse.
I was the not so lucky guy. Got there late around 6:30AM but just in time to catch the group of 8 crossing the large open field. Drove another mile to get into position. By the time I was able to get the rifle out and put four in the cartridge, the pigs came within 20 yds. I hit the large boar and that pig didn't even flinch. Turned on his burner and ran up the hill. I followed with another shot. I thought he was going to pile up on that hill so I decided to follow the other pigs that went up the other direction. Followed their tracks up the ridge and down to the other side toward 19. After an hour, I got back to when I shot the first pig and started tracking. Very minimal blood but with bubble so I thought he was not going to be far. I tracked that pig for over 3 hrs and lost him as he was descending down the other side to 19. Another barnes episode. I was shooting a 280 remington with barnes-x tipped.

I had another opportunity in the evening. Found a promising spot and I sat the entire day from noon til light out. At 6:45, a lone red pig came trotting and into a creek next to where i was sitting. I was afraid it was going to stay in that creek so I ran to the creek to intercept. Instead of following the creek, it crossed and came out the other side and busted me while I was on the run. I sat down and couldn't get the crosshair steady so it took off. I ran across the field hoping to get another chance but it never stopped. Back at camp and talked to these two guys from San Diego who said they watched the entire ordeal unfolded a few hundred yds away.

Live2Hunt and XD, wished you guys were there. Not too many two-pig opportunities...

Holy smoke! QEU, Wish I was there. Damn that is very depressing as that area of TA 15 is so open. Maybe the grass and thorn bushes were too tall.

I know you are not much of a semi-auto rifle fan, but now I think you are due for a semi-auto rifle for chasing pigs. Shooting pigs on the run, you don't always get the accurate hit on where you want it. So you need to quickly pump a few rounds into a pig to stop it in its track.

This thread is pretty good reading. thanks for the stories.

A question for those of you that hit FHL often, how's the weather in July and August? Is it too hot to even bother visiting? And do the mud holes actually dry up or are they always a nuisance? Thank in advance for any advice given.

QUE, I was going on what that young couple told me that talked to you. I guess they assumed you didn't track long when you went after the herd and didn't know you came back. I wish I had known that was you, I ended up on the north end of 19 that evening and could have helped look for that hog. Send me you cell or email and I'll holler when Im up there. I might go back this coming weekend.

To all,

Roads are in pretty good shape for all the rain we've had but there were a couple mud holes I turned around on in 19, 7 and 15. Also the Naciemento River is up and running hard, they advised not trying to cross it to the west. A couple of us walked it in 19 and it's hard bottom at the ford but swift water that can push your rig downstream. I watched the FHL game warden cross it and it was half way up his doors in one of them hold your breath moments. Course that's not his truck either, not sure if he'd do it with his POV.

A buddy took a jake turkey Sunday morning. No rattlesnakes spotted by me but one group said they saw rattlers in TA 2 I think it was. Poison oak and ticks are heavy as usual, spray your clothes down or use the liquid Permethrine to soak them to keep the ticks off.

Check in window hours are Friday 3pm to 5pm and Sat and Sun 5am to 5pm. The new guy was helpful and kept those hours pretty good, in the past the window person has come in late and left early which is a major PITA to hunters.

Also, they stocked Del Venturi res with some nice big rainbow trout so take a pole, the fishing is free at that reservoir.

Awesome place to hunt, hunted next to herds of tule elk, saw a bobcat stalking the tons of quail there, filmed some hogs that were out past shooting time, deer everywhere. The only thing I didn't see that surprised me was coyotes. I did hear them calling every night. Filmed a badger tearing up a ground squirrel mound too, that was kewl to watch. I almost creamed 4 jakes in 16B when driving out to hog hunt Sunday evening. I rounded the corner and there they were. I locked up the rear tires and the turkeys made the wrong move by turning and running down the road away from me instead of just hitting the shoulder. I braced for impact and right as 3 of them were about to go under the bumper they hit the wings which I figured would put them into my windshield, something I've seen before. By some miracle they launched to the side enough to miss the truck. I looked back and not even a feather knocked loose, just some frazzled and pizzed off turkeys LOL.

Hacienda still doesn' serve meals but I hear they are going to start their kitchen back up. The bar is open next door. Gibbs Hall had rooms for $39 for a double and $42 for a queen and $45 for a suite (bedroom, living room kitchen).

The campground has socked it to the older retired guys and others who rent a campground space all year because of some freeloaders not paying. Please, if you use the campground PAY your daily fee, it's only $10. The retired guys are on fixed income and their rates have almost tripled to make up for the money they don't collect from the sneakers. It's not fair and may cause the base commander to make some changes to the HONOR system since some don't seem to have any.

mdn, July/Aug is a death march but some of these guys like XD and Pat have an annual deer season kick off there. Hard core hunting in 100F temps

True that. was up there 3 or 4 seasons ago for the archery opener and I thought I was going to die. +120 degrees during the day and never got lower than 90 at night.
