Headed out for my first FHL pig trip, any ones else going out there? I've been trying to find a map of the areas so I can do some internet scouting, does anyone know where I can find a map of some of the archery areas?

Anything would help.

Thanks

Thanks for the info on 8, but the maps that are posted on JHO are not exactly what I am looking for. They are not detailed enough to see where I need to be and not need to be.

Thank you though.

Hello somisbow,

Good luck with your first hunting trip to Fort Hunter Liggett. You will also be the first hunter to use the new RECON HUNT Mobile Application for iPhone 4 that I made for FHL Hunters.

I will open my RECON HUNT Mobile Application until Friday evening, and then I will have to shut it down again. Copy what ever you need during the one day that I have it open. You can use any computer with the URL's have posted. If you send me an email I will attach the exact same GPX hunting area boundaries that I used for RECON HUNT.

This is a very nice offer but I don't understand. Do I have to buy something for this to work? I see that there is a Recon Hunt app for Android at a very good price. Will the stuff you're offering work with this or is it just for the iPhone 4? Lastly how do the items you are offering above get into the Recon Hunt app on the phone? Thanks!

Hello Brian,

Well, this smart phone stuff is for the younger generation. When the gal at Coco's took my lunch order I gave here my cell number thinking that she would add me to the computer tablet that she took my order with. Well, we ended up texting one another, and then it moved up to sexting when she attached a pic of her boobs. This old fart is having a lot of fun.

The basic building block for any of the mapping applications is my GPX file. I know how to make military maps, so my GPX files are dead-nuts. You can use just about any smart phone mobile application that will accept a GPX file. When you load my GPX file and zoom-in to it, you will see the hunting boundary placed onto what ever background map that you have loaded. Both the newer Android and iPhone smart phones have the GPS Chip built in, so you can navigate to, or stay inside of my GPX hunting boundary.

My GPX files are for the members of Jesse's Forum only, and I'm working with the software people at RECON HUNT to write the SHARE function so I can control who navigates with my GPX files. At present what you are seeing is only a picture.

Syncing is file sharing between 2 or more computers. That is how RECON HUNT loads the navigation maps into the smart phones running the RECON HUNT Application

MAP, thank you for posting the maps. I have a question that perhaps you can answer.

When a map is opened and the overlay for coordinate grid is chosen, is there a simple way to convert degrees, minutes and seconds into miles or yards/feet? Can you provide a formula without having to use trigonometric equations? Thanks!

Hello Imjpsl,

I was schooled by the US Army, so my hunting maps are in UTM. If you load the Training Area Handout Paper Maps that I have scanned and posted at RECON HUNT, you will notice that I placed the UTM Grid on them. You can navigate with my saved map, because I Geo Referenced them against the Geological Survey 24K Quadrangle Map. You can find your position on my modified FHL Handout Map the same way as when using the USGS 24K Quad.

I would suggest sticking to traditional UTM in Meters, and let your mapping application do the conversion.

Hey guys, the weather has cooled up here, and that means that the Salmon will move into the Sacramento River. I still have a Bear Tag that I haven't carried into the field yet, so here is a link to convert the many Google Earth KLM files that I passed out. This site will convert Google Earth into GPX for your smart phone applications, and that will give me some free time.

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input

Here is an example of all the FHL TA's converted by the free GPS Visualizer Web Site in to GPX. I have RECON HUNT set to "Secret Link Key', so that only the people with this URL can see this.

http://cabelas.trimbleoutdoors.com/...tLinkKey=b9309d5c-682c-4107-af2a-526b8de14aa7

Thanks, this will save me a ton of work.

Just checked the CDFG site and the J-10, G-8 and A-33 specal deer hunts will still be open next weekend so there is a good possablity it will be closed next weekend also, will just have to wait and see. After next weekend J-10 and G-8 closes and only A-33 remains open untill Nov 11. This will drop the number of hunters from 155 to 50 but i dont think they will keep it closed for the public just for that one hunt, will have to see what happens.

Saw that, but I know that there are 25 tags for civilians too. For sure we will see.

The software has a lot of bugs, so don't get lost and expect to find your way back with it. Carry a paper map and compass.

Well the weekend is upon us and they post up if They are going to let people hunt. I am lock, nocks and ready to rock! We will see, but the Late season archery tag is good through this weekend and 50 hunters have the first dibs it seems. So I'm not expecting much. But I'm ready all the same.

Later,
