Got my 2008 FHL permit but I'm having trouble finding lead free ammo, I don't reload so I need factory ammo in .223,.30-06 or .44mag either one would work. Guess I'll have to take my bow, seems like with ammo that hard to find there should be a lot less people hunting the fort.

Have you tried buying Ammo on line great selection and good prices. Only draw back it must ship ground no next day.

Dirt cheap ammo and Able Ammo are two good ones. I know the 30-06 has lots of loads I think 223 is also available.

ammoman.com is a good source for ammuntion. Not sure about his hunting ammo supplies but he's always moving literally tons of ammo...so check the site often.

Price is to your door. No up charges for shipping. Great deal for large/bulk orders.

Maybe I'm a little slow on the uptake...FHL is requiring non-lead ammo??? With all the military ordinance they've fired around there for years and years they're worried about a small group of hunters firing what, maybe 20 rounds total over a weekend??? WOW - I'm sure that quarter pound (if that) of lead is really going to push the lead total at FHL over the top...

Last time I checked they were using 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm in their small arms...my 7 mm is right in between those...

The compalint is that the condors eat the gut piles or carcasses left behind by hunters, which contain lead in the form of whole bullets or fragments left behind by expanding hunting copper-jacketed lead ammo. They don't eat bullets laying around on the ground or buried in a hillside... I doubt that the soldiers are leaving too many carcasses around!

There is doubt, however, that lead ingestion by condors (or other birds) is really a factor at all in their deaths.

There is great pressure from enviromental factions and from the feds. Since FHL and CR are military, guess what happened. Eventually the state will go green.

I know of many former FHL troops both active and reserve over the last forty years who have bragged about firing military ordinance at local game. You just kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

Unofficially of course! nobody sanctions that action in writing.

People brag about a lot of things. My Dad talked about shooting monkeys in Asia in WWII. When I was in the military, ammo was pretty well accounted for, most training was done with blanks and there were non-coms or officers around - some of whom, admittedly, would not mind letting you shoot up some varmints. I doubt, though, that many soldiers are running around Hunter Liggett with live ammo, shooting up the wildlife. Yeah, it happens - but probably less than what the hunters shoot. In 'nam, we did not shoot up too much wildlife, despite stories to the contrary, for a lot of reasons - letting the enemy knwo where we were, prefering to save the ammo to shoot the bad guys with who would be shooting at us, not wasting what we carried, etc.

I was responding to the post about all the ordnance laying around, like condors are going to eat an artillery round.

Hunthard, thank's, I got a buddy to order some .36 gr barnes x but he has a valid question , if they are reloads how do we prove they're lead free ? and unless you carry the mfg box with you how will they enforce this crazy law. I have some Wolf ammo that in the write up it says they are steel and tungsten, but it doesn't say that anywhere on the box of ammo. oh well..... I'll buy a box of politically correct ammo and take the guesswork out of the equation.
