13 dead bucks?? You gotta be in the buck capital of the world. That one's a shooter too in my book. Let's see....if they make it to spring that's 26 more sheds to pick up. By the way, did you make 50?
I found a carcass this year, just one. funny thing is the head and front legs were missing, I figured the yotes had dragged them off somewhere but I never did find the head. or else another shed hunter??
I found a 5pt (western count) today at dinner break. Coytoes left the bones and a bit of the hide. Looks to be a roadkill from this winter. We have found 8 died bucks now. Three were 5pts, one 4pt, two forkies and two carcasses with the racks cut off. The three 5pts and a big bodied carcass with the rack cut off were all from my hunting ground and to put it politely, that sucks!! One was poached/lost.
I'll post a picture of that and try to get one up tomorrow night of the 5pt I found today.
Brotherwolf
He is the first died buck I found during rifle season late last fall. Picture was taken then. He had been shot in the hind quarter with the bullet going into the gut. The land was posted and I figure he was shot by some poaching roadhunter as you could see the vehicle tracks going out in the field and driving right along the tree belt the buck was in. They then turned around and drove back along the belt and missed seeing him again as the belt wasn't all the wide and he was laying in the open. Too bad and what a waste of meat. He was a nice buck and most around here would have been very happy to get him. I figured he was 3.5 years old and in the next couple years would have been a really nice buck.
here is the picture of the 5pt I found yesterday. Looked to have been hit by a car earlier this winter. Looking at the bottom jaw, the buck was 3.5 at the most also and would have been not too bad of a buck in the next couple years if he had been hit.
TJF-that one buck you found in rifle season, that's a real shame. That rack is huge.I alway said I'd rather find a single shed off a buck rather then finding the buck dead.
mikey30-alot of the deer we find in our shedhunting area were probably hit on the road and ran off to die later. Some are archery kills were the slobs snuck in to hunt posted property or park property.Every now and then you'll find an arrow laying with or close to the remains.
As far as the doe skulls,we find dozens every year. The boy wants to keep everyone we find.If they're cleaned up and intact we usually take them home.It also depends on who has to carry it and how far to carry.
Shag-I haven't been out for a good serious look lately, still stuck on 48.I've been messing with those elk sheds..I went back mon. afternoon and spent the night and looked tuesday too..Nothing again!! I'm thinking about sticking with WT sheds only next year.
Deershed, don't do that. "Only stick with whitetails". If you find one elk shed its worth the time. This is coming from someone who has never found or even been in a place to look for elk sheds so I'm probably a little bit biased.
TJF, That first picture is a NICE buck! That sickens me when I find something like that especially if I have a good idea it was poached.
Yeah, that was a pretty nice buck at that. I find several a year, usually smaller ones but last year I found a 125" skulled rack. Gave it to a neighbors kid. Deershed, I don't believe you're gonna skip the elk sheds next year (LOL). I'll believe that when I see it. I'll meet ya down there for a shed hunt so you don't have to walk all those miles alone---in April though, not so early maybe. If it's a open winter we might be able to find some elk "back-in" and not too close to town.
You guys got my number pretty good,I'll probably go for elk sheds just as hard next year as I did this year.I might even make another trip this year,I hope not. It's in the blood and there's nothing I can do about it.It's a sickness I hope never goes away!!
Shag,I'm more then willing to have company along any time.
Here's a couple more pics of some dead ones. The first pic is of 2 dead ones I found last year and another pic of a couple nice ones with two weird racked buck.I found another one this year a twin to the one in first picture on right side.
Allways a shame to find them like that. But it's better you find them than letting them rot or get eaten. Deershed, it looks like the two behind the weird ones were getting some serious mass.
135inchsingle-those two and the two in the first picture were looking good for mass.
Here's another one that had great main beams with mass, but fell way short on tine lenght.
WOW Brotherwolf!! Finding a pair of locked bucks would be one time finding a dead buck wouldn't bother me.It would actually bother me more knowing how they meet their end.It must have been a long slow death for both.
Still, how often do you come across something like that??
CONGRATS to a excellent find!! Did you get the two of them mounted?
