Here are some USGS 24k maps (among many other forms of data) available for free. It is much easier to search this site than others.

Select your state, then county, then click on the .tiff link to download the map that covers your area of interest (the map names are quadrangles).

nice --this will be useful, a little dated but the National Forest boundaries are clearly marked and should be good as well as the topo.

GIS Data Depot is not completely free, but there is a lot of free stuff there. Everything is well organized, so it's best to let them store the data until needed.

Hay Map, I sent you an email because your PM box is full. Any way I can get a couple of the BLM maps from you? Trying to get the land map for Truckee and El Dorado. Thanks, Ken

The reason why I don't empty my in box is because attachments have to go through regular email. Here is my email at Yahoo:

trail_cam@yahoo.com

I have traced accurate BLM and Wildlife Boundaries for the places where I hunt along the Central Coast.

Be ware of the scanned BLM map that is being passed around, because it's grossly inaccurate. The Recon Hunt Public Land option is dead-on according to my GIS Data, but navigation with a cell phone leaves a lot to be desired.

The Recon Hunt web site allows tracing of the land boundaries and exporting them as GPX files that can be uploaded into just about every GPS software.
