I have been using a low-end Olympus 3.1 and am looking to upgrade for a hunting trip in Scotland next month. This one caught my eye if for no other reason than availability: I don't know much about dig-cams. Need a decent Hi-res camera for around $5C's. All advice welcome. ~AMMOe

First off, I don't have any experience with this camera. I'm just going off what I've read.

It looks like a pretty good cam. 6Mp is a good size and the fact that you can take pics in RAW is a plus to me. You can use the RAW pics to have larger reprints made. I will tell you, if you shoot in RAW that memory chip will fill up fast!

I have on Olympus with the Xd chip and most card readers don't accept that format yet.

Here is a review from Steves Digi-cams.

I have seen some great images produced by the camera, although I haven't used it myself. I would handle one to check out the build quality and controls/menu situation. Looks like a best buy for a travel and back up pro cam. Buydig.com is selling them for $445. WB

Thanks for the responses. I ended up buying the camera and enjoy it so far. I've been in a heavy work schedule so it's mainly been inside my office shooting at the differently lighted areas. So far so good. Easy to use and understand, with more features than a rank amateur like myself can readliy utilize.

One exceptional feature is the macro and super-macro settings. Amazing detail! I took a few pics of some recovered .58 caliber minie balls and the clarity and detail was mind boggling. I think the focal length in the "super macro" mode can be as close as 4 cm.

Anyhow, I'll enjoy the RAW feature, indeed. Looking forward to learning more about digital photography, that's for sure. ~AMMOe
