World War II aviator Chuck Yeager joined participants of the 20th annual Cal-Ore Fish Enhancement Steelhead Derby that got underway Friday on the Chetco River.

The weekend-long event, which also includes fishing on the Smith River, raises funds for local organizations such as the Cal-Ore Fish Enhancement project and the Curry Guides Association.

Yeager, a retired brigadier general, has been participating in the derby since 1992. He pulled into Loeb State Park Friday in a blue “Willy Boat” embellished with an orange airplane representing the same one he was flying when he was the first to break the sound barrier in 1947, propelling him into legendary status.

On Friday, Yeager was accompanied by Brookings fishing guide Val Early, and his partner and friend, Victoria D’Angelo. The guides donate their time free of charge to the derby.

In a separate boat, Yeager’s son, Don, and grandson, Kip, arrived with guide Gary Early, Val’s husband.

Yeager said he also enjoys fishing the ocean for halibut and salmon when he’s in town.

The derby is the second of two held every year to benefit Cal-Ore Fish Enhancement, which donates the proceeds to fish programs including hatchery and stream enhancement projects.

There are more than two dozen teams signed up for the derby. Each is a four-angler team with two guides.

Each team splits up with half fishing the Chetco on the first day, and the other half fishing the Smith.

You know, Chuck Yeager is my uncle.

Of course he's not the pilot Chuck Yeager, but that's really his name.
