Recently I placed Ghost Ring Sights on my 30-30 Winchester 94 Trapper and I think I really like them. I really like walking around these woods and mountains of WV after or before hunting season and doing some plinking and some bench rest shooting at our local range or in the back yard.
Many of the plinking shots are at pine cones, Copperheads and Rattlers at or under about 10 yards. After sighting in this rifle at dead so that I have to hold 1.5" low at 6:00 to hit dead center I'm having problems at 10 yards or less. If I hold right on I hit about 3" low. I'm shooting Winchester 170 gr. CXS-2 Power Point because they seem to really shoot great from this rifle and they are really cheap to buy at Wal-Mart ( $11.43 ) and they are easy to find just about anywhere.
Is my hitting so low my fault or is that just the trajectory of this bullet?

Line of sight is above the bore, so rifle will shoot low at close range. What distance did you sight in at?

Incher48, With these new Ghost Ring sights I just set it up to aim 1.5" low at 50 yards to hit dead center. I was hoping this would be good at any distance between 10 yards and 50 yards for plinking and having fun over the summer.I have shot this gun at 200 yards and had great groups but wanted to try these sights at 50 yards and less just to get used to them before moving out to 75-100 or better. Most of our Deer and Bear are taken at 50 yards and under anyway around here. Mike

With something that has the trajectory of the 30-30, and the conditions you described as normal, I'd recommend sighting in for dead zero at 25 yards. That's still gonna put you a bit off at 10, but the 30-30 never was and never will be a "precision" instrument.

A lot of practice and familiarity with where the rifle hits at different ranges is the only way you'll be able to consistently pound targets the size of a snake's head at varying ranges. Sounds like you're on the right track with your plinking habits.

Specmisser, I have to disagree with you about the accuracy of these rifles. After shooting them off and on for the past 50 years I know what they are capable of. This is the Trapper with the short 16" barrel and at 50 yards with 6 shots from a bench rest I had 3 holes touching each other, two a half inch apart and one flier. This is the norm for this rifle and in the right hands it does great at 100 yards also. Have taken a few Deer at little over 200. I don't have this problem at 10 yards with my Williams peep or even my stock buck horn sights but for some reason I'm not getting a good consistent close shot with these Ghost Ring Sights.
I just can't figure out if it's me or the sights or if I have to do something different. You may be dead on about trying it at 25 yards dead on with these sights.I'll have to try that after I pick up another box of shells. Thanks for your help and advice, Mike
