Thinking about getting one of those GMRS radios, but noticed that they require an FCC license.  Does anybody have one of these (radio that is)?  They have a rebate at Office Depot.  I think its one of those things where they sell it to you, but the paperwork inside the box says you'd better have a license to operate.  I read somewhere that it's a $10k fine for not having a GMRS license!!!  Is it possible to even get caught?  Not that I'd want to do something illegal or anything . . . but c'mon.  The license is $75 for 5 years.  I just don't get it - why the heck would you need a license?  You take no test, there is no background check, seems like a scam to get $75 outta ya!!! Give me a break!!!

I bought 2 of those radios last year and yes, I got FCC licence for them. I figured it was not too bad of a price to stay out of trouble. I did the whole application over the internet. The radios I bough were Cobras and they have a lot better sound quality than the FRS radios.
