This will be my 5th trip up there hunting for pigs this year with no succsess. Although my last trip we got on some pigs and I let my newcomber friend shoot first and he missed. Good Luck on your hunting trip. Wish I could join you, but went to Camp Roberts last week and will be heading up again in a few weeks. Maybe one day we can make get together and plan a trip, must say I enjoy VAFB even know I've only seen two pigs up there and both are now in the freezer.

I do archery hunt, but I haven't had any luck with the pigs yet. I'm going to HOGS WILD the middle of may with my new bow. I just got done purchasing a HOYT VORTEC and can't wait to use it. When I go to VAFB I take my rifle and shotgun. I have never been close enough up there to use my bow yet, but maybe one day I'll have to try.

One last thing I would like to say is "if you haven't joined the ROD AND GUN club yet, DO IT". One of the nicest cleaning areas I've ever seen with the use of the walk in cooler.

Kodiak,

We will be hunting the normal archery area to my knowledge. The three of us have been up there once before and seen more pigs than I've ever seen before but didn't get the chance at a kill shot. I loved it so much up there that I plan on making it a yearly event. I would recommend Larry and Jeremy to everyone. I've never had the chance to hunt a ranch like that before so I have nothing to compare it too, but I will say that anyone that thinks it would be easy....NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

These have to be the smartest darn Pigs in California. I'll let you all know how we do when we get back. We will be hunting HOGS WILD during the week and if we don't get what we are after CAMP ROBERTS that weekend. Would be nice to meet up with you sometime for a good hunt.

As for VAFB, it is a MILITARY only hunt. I shot a sow there about a month or so ago but the base is not running wild with pigs like many may think. I seen more pigs on Camp Roberts in the one time I've been up there than all the times I've been to VAFB. But don't take me wrong, Camp Roberts is far from a sure thing too.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting all,
David

david, looking forward to your report. say hi to larry and jeremy for me. larry had a younger son, but he passed away at an early age. he was great also. you should ask larry about the backside where he planted a barley field. i don't know if its open yet, but he said he'd let people start hunting it this summer. larry does have a unique operation going there. you're right about it not being easy. i've had pretty good luck up there though. mostly along the frontside where the waterfall comes down into the canyon. the milkweed is always good in the evenings. good luck and hope we can get a hunt planned together. marc

When you talk about the water falls, are you refering to the area that is past the milkweed flats. IF your talking about that area I think your talking about, where do the pigs come from? Your are correct about the flats(milk weed) good in the evening when nobody goes to the hills during the day time, because when they do nothing comes down until after dark. I think I'm going to try and go to the top and walk the fense line the whole way around and come down above the water falls. Didn't find this spot until the last day and the pigs seem to come to the pond up there all day long. I shouldn't ruin anyone else's evening hunt being up there seeing I wouldn't be walking the hill sides. I'll let you know how I do when I get back. Was hoping to get my new bow in the mail today but guess not.

david, bummer about your new bow. i know what it's like to be waiting for a new toy. i just got a new bow this year too. anyway, the area i'm talking about is the creek bed that runs around the entire front of the area. the fence runs along the road up to the hog pens. i usually find a spot along the fence or just below to set up. you can see the pigs come down the hills in front of you. another way of seeing it is, if you were to walk to the end of the flat area where the milk weeds are you would be looking down into a canyon and at the bottom the creek runs through it. that is the place. ask jeremy where you should hunt if you were near the pens. he'll drive you over there.

I know exactly where your talking about. The flat area along the fence over looking the pens is where I sat the first night the last time I was there. Pigs didn't come down until I couldn't see anymore.

I'm not sure if its the idea that I'm getting a new toy or the thought that I'm not going to get much of a chance to shoot it before the hunt. I'm one of those hunters that believes everytime you get a new gun or bow you should practice practice practice before you use it. But in this case I really don't have a choice seeing my other bow was destroyed and I was forced to get a new one before the hunt.
