My wife and I left Friday morning for Paso Robles to go pig hunting with Tom Willoughby. We had plans to meet Tom is San Ardo at 3pm, but due to NASTY Los Angeles traffic, we weren’t able to meet him until 430pm. Our first stop was the hotel to change clothes, gather our gear and grab a quick bite to eat. We hit the road again, heading north to San Ardo (about 30 miles north of Paso). We met Tom and his son Blake and headed up to the ranch. The ranch we hunted was about 25,000 acres, mostly rolling hills with high grass with a few trees here and there. Our means of hunting would be driving around in a Polaris ranger, spotting the pigs and then putting the stalk on them.

It took about two hours to find some hog feeding in the shade along the side of hill, we were about 3 miles back on the ranch when we spotted them. Most of the pigs in the small herd we piglets feeding with it's mom, however there was a decent sized sow in the herd as well. The plan was to have my wife shoot the dry sow and we would find a hog for me later. We put the stalk on the herd, got in shooting position and were ready to shoot when the wet sow spotted us and started making her way up the hill towards us, snorting all the way. I whispered to Blake that "mom" was on her way up, he looked down the canyon and confirmed my suspicion. He then advised my wife it was time to shoot, she made a perfect one shot kill on the sow, the sow ran down hill into the creek bed and died. When she shot, the hill erupted with about 10 pigs we never spotted, in the herd was a red colored boar, I took aim and hit him on the run, he tumbled and I thought he was dead. About 20 seconds after hitting the creek bed, he got up and continued running down the creek bed, I jumped on the quad with Tom and we sped down the two-track to get ahead of him, I jumped off the quad out the crosshairs on him and put him down for good. WHEW! Two pigs down within 2 hours!

We were both shooting Federal Premium Barnes Triple Shock bullets, my wife had her .308 (150Gr.) and I was shooting my .270WSM (130Gr.)

Tom and Blake estimated the pigs weighed about 175lbs each.

We had a great time, Tom and Blake are good guys, hard-workers. Tom was nice enough to offer us the use of his walk-in cooler for the pigs while we spent the rest of the weekend in Paso Robles.

As most of you guys know, marriage is about compromise....we spent most of Saturday on the wine tasting room circuit...

I will try and figure out how to post pictures.....

Fun hunt! and Ans for Henry54

Sounds like you had a real fun hunt with Tom. I'm curious how you found Tom and what made you decide to go with him. I've hunted twice this year with him and it has been lots of fun and hog education as well as downed hogs. Love to see the pictures. If you can shoot a running hog, you can sure figure out how to post pictures.

Henry54 asked about price. Tom's price for a 2 day hunt has been $575/person (gratuity not included) and it is extra if you take a second hog with the price of that second hog depending on the size and the ranch you are hunting. He likes to hunt the first evening as the hogs are often out in the evenings. The only "problem" with Tom appears to be how efficient he is at finding hogs and getting into a shooting solution so that it is all over too quick. His phone is 831-385-3003 and it is best to call in the evening. If he isn't in, he is real good about getting back to you. If you call him, tell him Andy Saxon says "Hi".

I found Tom by doing some searches on these forums as well as reading about the results of your hunts with Tom. Yes, he is very efficient in getting you on pigs.

I can't figure out this picture thing!

The smile on your wife's face is "priceless." And that is before you got stuck into the wine. I agree with krad, win-win.

Great job on the porkers. I've heard nothing but wonderful things about Tom for many many years, but haven't hunted with him yet. I was driving up 101 the other day through Paso Robles and San Ardo, and thought to myself that I need to give him a call. You've just confirmed my decision again.

Tom is probably one the the TOP guides in the Area, if not "the" top guide in the area. I use to hunt with Frank (Mustang Guide Service) quite often. Tom and Frank are neck and neck when it comes to leased ranches and productivity..IMO.

Thanks guys! Yep, I'm a southpaw. I had that rifle built for me, so much easier to cycle a left handed bolt when the action is fast and furious. Tom is a great guide, the only issue I had was the hunt was over too quickly....!!:pig-laughing:

I was speaking with Tom today about some non-hunting stuff and he tells me he's getting pretty busy so if you want to get out before it gets real hot up there during the day, you should contact him soon. If he's not there, leave a message - he's real good about getting back to you.
