GOOD NEWS ON QUAIL

K.C. Star

12/19/02

Finally, there's some good news to report about Missouri quail hunting.

Hunters in the north-central and west-central regions are finding much improved bird populations.

In the west-central, for example, bird numbers are the best they've been in five years, according to officials with the Missouri Department of Conservation.

"Hunters who spend three to six hours in the field have been finding two to four coveys," one biologist said. "And that's a lot better than it has been."

The same is true in the north-central, where quail numbers are markedly higher.

Biologists point out that the hunting is still a far cry from what it once was. But they add that there is at least some reason for optimism.

Because of shoulder surgery this year, I didn't mow 1/2 the fields I usually do. Talk about a bumper crop of quail! This is the 1st time in years, I've had this many quail on my property... The reporter ain't lying about the west-central region...
