Thinking of going on my first elk hunt here and was wondering if anyone out there has any knowledge of the place.
I reserved a few days first week of november. Guided cow hunt for $900 w/ no license or tag to draw. The lady I spoke
to at the office said she's never heard of anyone going home empty handed after a cow hunt. Sounds good.

We went on our first Hunt ever last year with the Goshute Indians. I must say overall it was a great experience and I would certainly recommend them. The guide was a great guy, pretty laid back but a very likeable guy, he cleaned and skinned all of our kills and just generally helped to make it a great trip.

We had a 4 day hunt planned, and were starting to get a little nervous after not seeing any Elk the first two days. We saw deer all day long even within 50-100yds of the truck, but just simply were not seeing any elk. They have several herds of Elk on their land but we just simply weren't seeing any of them. Finally on the 3rd day we saw our first herd of Elk, nearly 100 head of Elk on the side of a ridge parallel to the road we were traveling. Our guide had us stay in the car then sped up ahead of the elk so we had a few seconds to get setup for them.

We ranged it out to about 300yds and got setup just as the first Elk started to crest the ridge. We had we only managed to catch one Elk out of that herd even though several of us had tags to fill. I ended up wounding one of them which caused it to stop and then one of the other hunters finished it off once it was stationary.

The last day of our hunt we still had a couple tags to fill and were off again to see if we could find some more Elk. We managed to run across a second herd that day about noon, this herd was slightly smaller with only bout 60-70 head. We spotted them on the top of one of the mountain ranges about 300yrds off again and they were starting to move away. The guide had us stay in the car and we booked it around the peak to the other side to try and cut them off. He managed to put us smack dab in the middle of the herd. We hopped out and the first shot was taken between 50-100yds. This is where the "Truck 'O' Elk" picture comes in, we literally filled the bed of the truck with Elk, you can see all their legs sticking up in the back.

We were all Novice hunters and this was our first major hunt, we made plenty of mistakes along the way and came out with a bunch of great stories and experiences and learned a bit more about hunting. The Elk typically were found in the early morning so be ready to get up and going early if you want to catch them. The mountains were beautiful and the trip was fun and exciting. It looks like they raised their prices a little since we went last year, but overall still a great price and an amazing experience. I'm not sure how their gurantee works as we never had to cause to use it but all you need to do is find a single herd of elk over your trip and everyone in your group can fill their tags if they're reasonable shots.

We're talking about our next hunt now, we have done the elk and are now talking about a deer hunt.

That's good info thanks.

Did you stay in town or are you able to stay on the ranch?

Theirprices seem prett resonable for a cow elk hunt. What did they include in the price.. meals, etc. Thanks

You might get them to discount the hunt a bit less than that. I think they were selling tags in the SLC newspaper last year for $300 or $400.

I guess I'm a little confused. Did you actually get out and hunt or basically road hunt? No saying anything bad, but am asking so if I get more interested in this hunt I'll know more on how the hunt goes.

We caught it last year for $400 per person for the hunt, though they were advertising on their website for $600 at the time.

We stayed at the camp site in a few of their trailers. Meals, and use of the trailers were an additional cost, though they may certainly be willing to negotiate that into the price at $900 per person. The camp site had two little trailers that housed roughly 3-4 people each. There is a little creek running behind the camp site, a tri-pod in the site for cleaning/skinning game, and a porta pottie in the camp. There appears to be a some what portable sink with running water (don't think it's drinkable). I think I've got a few shots of the camp, let me try to dig em up real quick...

Couldn't find any good pictures of the camp site, but here's one of my favorites from the trip :)...

A little more digging and I managed to turn up a picture of the camp site...

And another picture just for fun...

This is my Father and my Brother-in-law, we stopped off in Wendover at a roach coach for lunch here one day. When I realized what the sign behind us said I decided I should get a picutre. Anyone who knows them knows that they would be the last people you would see at a XXX video shop, they had no idea what I wanted to take their picture for at the roach coach but catching them in front of that sign is priceless lol, great black mail for later lol.

I believe they will do it however you want. We basically did a road hunt. None of us were in terribly good shape, and my father has some serious health issues but really wanted to go on the hunt. The herds are fairly large and if caught out in the open should be fairly easy to see. The two herd we ran across were about 60-70 head, and the other at about 90 head roughly.

Let me also just mention that if the elk was not near the road I have no idea how you would get them back. After cleaning the animals and taking the heads off it was still all the four of us could do just to get them into the back of the truck. Most of the cows we took were about 400lbs(350-450) hanging weight (ie after cleaning, skinning, and with no heads).

We saw some great Bull elks up there as well but never could get close enough for a good picture, and since we didn't have Bull tags didn't try terribly hard. We spotted Deer every single time we went out and saw them pretty much all through out the day. The Elk were basically only seen in the morning. The first sighting was the tail end of the heard (only saw about 10) just as they were entering a tree line which occured around 9/10am, the second sighting and our first kill was on a herd of about 90 head at about 7/8am, and the 3rd sighting was the herd of about 70 head at about noon (5 kills from this herd).

Thanks for the reply and I hear ya on getting an elk back to the truck, regardless of where it's killed. Work, is an understatement! If you don't mind I would like the contact info for my files. You can email them to me at cmow2006@yahoo.com
