Wow.....I'm beat. Its been a LONG 48 hours, but well worth it.
On Monday I was at work and a co-worker of mine asked if I wanted to go to lunch. We went out to grab some grub and we got on the topic of hunting. He knew I hunted, but didnt know I liked to hunt hogs. He's hunted in the past, but according to him it's just not his thing. Over lunch he told me that his parents have a house up in King City that sits on a little over 200 acres. Robert said every now and then his dad has problems with the hogs coming down and tearing up his fields. On the way back from lunch Robert called his dad and they chatted for awhile. Robert told his dad that his buddy at work loves to hunt hogs and that I would gladly help him thin his population if he would let me. Jim (Roberts dad) said that he has been seeing the hogs come down off of the hill that adjoins his property every single night for the past 2 weeks. They are coming in to his apple orchards and eating and rooting/tearing things up. Last week I planned on heading up to Monterey on Tuesday night to check on one of my stores. Robert told his dad that I would be up there and would be free Wednesday. Tuesday afternoon I packed up my truck with all my work crap and took my "44 Mag and a Pig Tag" just in case his dad called me
. Tuesday night I got up to Monterey VERY late, grabbed a room and finished what I needed to do on Wednesday morning. Wednesday afternoon I was on the 101 headed for home. As I was passing King City I was thinking "Damn, sure would be nice to head over there". As I was passing Paso Robles my cell rings and its Roberts dad Jim. We talked on the phone for a few minutes and he said if I still in the area to shoot on over for a night hunt
. After he gave me directions, I fliped a B@#$% and pointed my truck towards King City. Once I got there he treated me like I was one of his kids. He showed me around and filled me in on what he has been seeing. He took me over to where his apple trees were and it looks like someone took a roto tiller to his property. At about 5pm we got set up in his shed. He said they have been passing by the shed almost every evening to get to his orchards. We were sitting there talking for about 40 minutes when something caught my attention. I look over and see 4 black hogs coming down off of the hill coming straight for us
. I raised my 44 Mag and rested it on a 2x4 he had in the shed. I gave Jim my range finder and asked him to let me know as they get closer. I pick out the one I want and it happens to be a sow the second from the last. I hear "75 yards..............54 yards.............32 yards.........19 yards....KA BOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM. The sow drops from a single 300 Grain Federal Castcore to the bolier room. The other hogs scatter like rats and we run out there to finish her off.
We field dressed her and skinned her out. I must of thanked him 1000 times for him calling me and letting me do this hunt. After a few pictures (forgot my digital camera, so all I had was a cheap disposible in my glove compartment) I then headed home. I will post the pics as soon as I get them developed. I'm guessing she weighed between 175lbs- 190lbs. He didnt have a scale, so I'm guessing. I'm off to my buddys work right now to play Mr. Butcher for a few hours and process this thing.
