Went mouflon sheep hunting up on Mauna Kea yesterday afternoon but the clouds and drizzle forced me back down the mountain. The visibility was less than 50 feet and the drizzle was frigid. Saw one large boar on the way down the hill but couldn't find it in the dry, knee-high grass. They get spooked, find a large bush, hunker down out of sight, and that's that.

On the way home, driving down the two-lane highway in total darkness out on the rolling grasslands, a pig, maybe 50 pounds or so, maybe a bit larger, shot out from the grass and ran in front of my truck. It happened so fast that I couldn't even tap my brakes.

WAM!!!

No place to pull over for about a mile and when I did, using a flashlight, I couldn't see any damage to the truck. A few black bristles were attached to the undercarriage. It was quite an impact and I can't imagine the pig survived, but I suppose it's possible. It's a dangerous road at night so I didn't go back to check out the scene.

Pigs still tearing up our neighborhood. The trapper hasn't caught a thing yet and many neighbors don't want to harm the pigs, so I guess they'd better get used to having their landscaping torn to shreds. I've got my crossbow for any trespassing porkers. I won't call the trapper and I won't run outside waving my arms and shouting. ZZZAAAPPPP!!! Problem solved.

Aloha for now.

Be careful Doc, we don't want anything to happen to you or your truck...then we wouldn't get anymore tales of your Island adventures!!!!

So did you run him over or did he bounce off the bumper?

I can't wait to get out there for a week! Hopefully this Xmas if the girl friend passes the Bar Exam, we both need a Vacation.

Good luck and stay safe!

Doc,

Is it possible the hogs are committing suicide due to overcrowding (the lemming phenomenon)?

Then desperately, these hogs need us to thin their herd.

Several years ago I was asked by the State to exterminate feral Peacocks surrounding a condo complex in Makaha, but half the tenants thought they were cool and opposed to their removal so even with permission I declined, didn't want to deal with their BS.
I still think a well placed Aquila 60 grain SSS round would be silent but deadly.

sportyg:

Hunting on Parker Ranch is excellent, with good guides, but it costs a lot. Better bet is to hunt along the ranch borders on public land. Hunting almost as good and a lot cheaper---like free.

All hunters need Hunter Safety proof, so make sure you've taken the class. Licenses are easily obtained online.
