Hello All. I was FORTUNATE to get a cow tag for Tinemaha. I read a posting by bowhuntr whre he gave the name Mark Johns who apparently leases a lot of land in the hunt zone. Does anyone have a contact email or phone number for him or other ranchers or landowners in the hunt area? Your help would be much appreciated. I will be hinting by myself. I like the one on one style of hunting at times. Thanks John Ormsby

I don't have a contact for you, but I do know that there are elk in the foothills as well as the ones in the open fields. The cover in the foothills will give you more cover to work from.

If your tag is for the Tinemaha and West Tinemaha hunt, no need to call anybody. Be there the day before the hunt and if you see the elk in the alfalfa pasture (No Hunt Zone, they are almost always there) between 395 and Fish Spring Road, just plan to be on Fish Spring Road at first light on opening morning. The rancher usually will flush the elk out of the pasture and they usually cross Fish Spring road and head up the hills. You take your pick of a cow as soon as they cross Fish Spring Road and make sure you are shooting towards the hills and not towards 395.

If you don't see elk in the pasture the night before, try the open field on both sides of Steward Lane. Be there at first light and you might be lucky to catch that herd before they head into the tree lines. Other than that, you might have to bust them out of the tree line along the river and that might be tough.

There is also a dirt and gravel turn off to the east side of 395 about 1/3 of a mile south of Fish Spring road and takes you to a vista point up on top of a hill that gives you the whole view of the lake and tree lines. You might find elk glassing from that vantage point and plan your stalk. Good luck.

I helped a friend hunt that last year and spent some time up there before and during the season scouting. He had the archery bull hunt but we had cows all around us. The rancher does push the elk out of the field and they head NW, across fish springs road and up the side of that bare volcanic mountain. If you do not shoot one off of fish springs road, glass that bare mountain. There is a pole line road that starts about midway down the field ( on the west side of the field) and runs NW up the side of that mountain. We always found the herd right below the crest standing in an opening in the NW side of that mountian. They act more like pronghorn then other elk as they go to where they can see for miles instead of into the thick stuff(river) when pressured. Hope that helps.

Hello All,

Thanks much for the info.
I have hunted muleys and some pronghorn , here in california and wyoming, for many years. I normally have the rifle sighted in at 300 yds.
I thought it would be easier to try for a cow tag than a bull. I would prefer a bull, but the meat is so good on either.
A friend of mine got an elk at grizzly island a few years ago. I went with him to help out. That was a fun hunt. Got it on the second morning.

Congratulations on drawing. Good luck on your hunt , and thank you guy's w/tips. I plan on putting in for Tenemaha, and La Panza cows myself from now on, just tying to get cow tag is a ordeal in this state. Any elk is a trophy , and any elk tag in CA. is golden, IMHO
