Another invasive predator: Fish and Game biologists were shocked last week to find yet another invasive predator fish, the grass carp, found at Lake Siskiyou in the headwaters of the Sacramento River. Four carp, including a 60-pounder, were caught by the DFG's electro-shocking boat. Unless the fish turns out to be sterile, of the variety commonly used to control farm or golf course pond vegetation, Fish and Game said it would launch an eradication program to keep carp from getting downstream.

"Because of its high reproductive potential, a grass carp population with the lower Sacramento river and Delta could result in a serious disruption of the food chain used by other fish," said Paul Wertz of the DFG. He said a pond found with grass carp in Modoc County last year was drained as an emergency measure to kill out the fish.
