So today I went up to Wes Thompson's rifle range in Piru. I figured the A zone opener would mean it would be less busy there. I was right.
So the first thing I wanted to do was check the zero on my CVA Wolf .50 muzzleloader. I'm taking it to Camp Roberts next weekend and haven't shot it since last season. It's got a nice Bushnell 3-9x40 on top.
So I load up 100 grains of 777(pellets) and a Barnes 250gr. TMZ. Aim at the bullseye at 100 yards and BOOM! 1" high at 100. Just where I wanted it. Took 2 more shots without cleaning and had about a 1.5" group. Not bad.
Next I brought out my Savage .223. I took 3 shots with 53gr. Cor-bon's DPX (basically a barnes TSX) and they were all touching right in the Bullseye. Cool.
Then I tried my new box of Federal Speer TNT Green 43gr. bullet. It's one of the least expensive lead free bullets I have found (I don't reload). Well take 3 shots and guess what...same shot placement as the DPX's: dead center and a sub MOA group. Awesome.
For some reason even though they have a 10gr. and 600fps difference these two bullets group nearly identical in my rifle. Don't ask me why
Then I went 5 for 5 shooting at a 6" steel plate at 200 yards.
All in all a great day at the range
