Has anyone tried this area? I just got Roxy back from Larry and I'm dying to get out. This is a little over 2 hours from me but want to know if it's worth it. Not looking for your hot spots or anything like that, just want to know if this area holds moderate quail populations and may be even come chukar?

Thanks.

I've hunted on the west side of New Idraa road. Lots of quail and quite a few chucker, and occcasional pigs. Not a lot of area on the west side but there are a lot of quail and chucker, it is just extremely steep and hard to get around. I spent a lot of my time sliding down the hill on my rear to reach the quail and chucker, only to find that they would flush down hill or to the side. I would then have to find a way to try and go jump the individuals, only to find that by the time you got to where they went, they were gone. I've decided not to hunt the west side anymore, nearly impossible for a good hunt. A friend of mine has hunted on the east side, steep trail at the parking lot, but it does get easier once you make it to the top. He saw some quail, but the coveys were scattered and you had better plan on a lot of boot leather. If you decide to go, bring plenty of water for yourself and your dog. Another place to think about with easier hunting in the same general area is Panoche Hills across from Mercy Hot Springs. Access is good, and fairly flat with plenty of roads leading to the draws and canyons. Good luck if you go and keep us posted on your hunt.
Happy Holidays!

Chukars there too? Really? I thought there is non to the west of the Sierras. I might be moving to Sacramento area and want to know all the spots to hunt chukars. (Well, I already know about Reno and Sparks. )

I heard there were chukars there, its only a couple hours north of carizzo. Shoottime, thanks for the info, I may give it a shot. I need to put some weight on my dog, she's an active dog when gone in training and very hard to keep on weight.

There is definately chucker on the west side of New Idra Road as well as quail. It is steep all the way to the top where it turns to private property. Never could find out who owns the land, but it isn't BLM. The chucker always seemed to fly across the fence line onto private property. The hillside is above the road just past the parking lot where the creek crosses under the road. Look at a topo map and it will show you exactly how steep and rough it is. If you go, it will be hard on you and your dog. The hillside is scattered brush, pines, oaks and junipers with a lot of gullies and draws cut out by erosion. Good luck if you decide to go and let us know how you do. They are there, but hard to get too.
