Guided Hog Hunts with Kids

After three fun but empty handed "dad guided" boar hunts at CR and FHL and WU property, my 12 and 14 year old have started to become dissolutioned and the wife has taken to calling our trips armed hiking. Clearly I'm failing as a father.

I see my options as either letting them blast something at Big Horn or a guided hunt. I'd prefer guided, but at $600 - $800 per head, this gets really expensive, especially since we can't bring 3 pigs home. Anyone know of a decent hog guiding / outfitting operation in so or central cal. that has some sort of father / sons or family package?

For my son's first hog hunt I took him to Burrows Ranch in Red Bluff. He and I hunted together and if I remember right it got a little cheaper the more people you had. Best part was Bill and Kay take great care of you and you will have a blast. My son shot a hog and they video tape it for you which sold me more. I didn't get a shot at a pig but after my son took his it really didn't matter. It's worth a call at least. Good luck.

It's awesome that you're even trying. Sounds like you're an awesome dad. Lucky kids. I know that Tejon is expensive. But, maybe they'll toss you a deal if you ask nicely. One adult and two kids. Tell them what you've tried so far, and they might throw you a bone. It's worth a call.

If you do the Tejon PORs, kids hunt for half-price (or close to half price). I don't know if they offer a deal for the guided hunts, but I'd imagine it never hurts to ask.

Call David Rossi at Panch Rico Creek Ranch outfitters. His ranch is just east of San Ardo, about 50 miles north of Paso Robles. The nicest guy you'll ever meet and one heck of a hog hunting operation!! I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

never understood the 2 inch tooth rule though? pretty much guarantees you will spend in upwards of 700.00 for a hog

as damn near every mature hog out there sow or boar has 2 inch teeth , guess thats the going rate these days though, and if you can get it, get it!! san ardo is definetly loaded with the swine

I would go to Burrow's ranch in Red Bluff (what daddy63 said). They will take good care of you (prepare to gain about 10 pounds from the insane food they feed ya). The cabin is very comfy, hot showers, fishing ponds. Reasonable fee and worth the drive.

Pancho rico creek is one of the lowest priced guided hunts in the state. Yes, there are plenty of monster hogs up there but, if you don't want to spend the cash shoot a nice meat sow. If you're a bowhunter, $400 is very reasonable for a guided hog hunt. I've seen close to 100 hogs on a weekend hunt up there before. You will see hogs on this hunt!

No disrespect to hatchet one but I've never seen or heard of a sow with 2" teeth. If you did happen to kill a freak hog like that, I'm sure you would not be charged a trophy fee with Pancho Rancho creek ranch. That's the type of detail you want to discuss where ever you book a hunt. Some of the ranches run production hunts that aren't very personable. Again, if you want an awesome hunt and a life long friend, give David a call. My wife shot a mean looking jet black hog a few years ago. I would have sworn it was a boar but it turned out to be a sow over 200lbs....one inch teeth.

plenty of girl hogs out there that are a bit long in the tooth,so ive been told

cant eat teeth ,foolish trophy rules like that
are geared to make money and give the inexperienced hunter the shock and awe effect when they walk up to thier"trophy",I tend to strongly disagree with that type of tactic, just my opinion of course,once again,sounds like a great place,and if you can get the money for a long tooth,by all means get it!!

I just wanted to share a picture of the trophy boar I took hunting Pancho Rico Creek Ranch. My wife and I have taken 9 hogs on the ranch since 2003. This is the only one that qualified as a trophy. It had 3.25" teeth showing on each side. We estimated it to be between 275 and 300lbs. Happy hunting!

I hear ya. In my research, it seems like 99% of the ranches either charge $1000 out front or charge a trophy fee. Some do both! David will work his tail off to get you a shot at a non-trophy if that's what you want. I personally don't go up there to kill trophy hogs. I would like to take a true monster with my bow one day but a 150-200lb sow is my hog of choice!

May believe it or not! That's what the ranch looks like in May on a typical year. The past two have been more dry. It truly is a gorgeous place in the winter. It looks more like Ireland than central CA in March.
