Ok...I've read here for a few months and decided I like what I read and want to share with you what I consider to be a very good guided pig hunt in the Parkfield area. Maybe I should keep quite about a good thing, but some of the posts I see here ask of good guided hunts so here is my two cents....Roger Miller out of Parkfield. I have his cell number, but will not post that as he has a regular phone that I surmise he would prefer you all to use. Sorry I do not have that, but if you call information, Parkfield, ask for Roger Miller...(this is a town of maybe 25 people, folks) I know he is listed under that name, however, the operator may say there is a Roger and Sherry (I think that is her name) Miller..if the operator does...that's is the one you want to talk to.
Ok, now for the reasons why I recommend him. First...he is a good ole boy. 100%. He is a conservationist while at the same time one of the best hunters I have had the pleasure of meeting. In this case, he lives on 6000+ acres of pure pig country. He is by trade a cattle rancher, farmer. He never ever uses dogs. This is no road hunt. It can be, but much of it is spot and stalk. Some rugged country. As easy or as hard as you are willing to make it. When I first hooked up with Roger, I explained I wanted to focus on a trophy boar. He said no problem. I passed up on over 100 pigs I could have easily shot to hold out for that big boar. There was never any pressure to kill what I didn't want to kill. I had a great opportunity for what he said was a 325 pounder and after climbing up and down these friggin' hills to get to this herd, I finally put the cross hairs on it but hesitated a split second to catch my wind and as I did, the hog picked up our scent, snorted and disappeard before I knew what day it was. He was as disappointed as I was, but we got over it. It was getting dark so I settled on a 70lb meat hog for the freezer. I passed on bigger pigs because if I was going to get a meat hog, it was going to be a small guy for tenderness and for space concerns.
Anyhow, He did a one on one for $500. An evening, a morning and another evening, and if necessary, another morning. As far as I am concerned, he offers a great hunt. If logding is desired, he has a cabin he rents out as well. Rogers service may not be for everyone. He is a no frills kinda guy and he doesn't much like big city attitudes if you know what I mean. My kinda guy. He will even tell you straight out what is happening in advance. If it's a full moon, he may tell you to wait. There are so many other variables to consider when chosing when and where to go and if there is something negative in the air, he will tell you straight out what it is and why you should wait. ie: roads are too wet, moon causing problems finding hogs, whatever the case may be. If you ask, he will tell you and you will get the skinny with no B.S. If you want a trophy boar, and IF you ask him his advice, he will tell you when its best to come and why.
Roger is unpretentious and unassuming. As I said...what I consider to be a good ol' boy. A dying breed for sure. I hope this is of use to some of you looking for this kind of guide service. I have a pending hunt with him any day now. Just waiting for word when conditions improve. He doesnt advertise, and he usually asks who refered you. If you are interested and you decide to check into it. Just tell him a guy who has hunted with him posted this information and you are inquiring about it. I do not want to give my name out as reference not knowing who it is I am refering. As I said...a good thing I almost kept to myself, but you all seem ok so there it is.
