I could reserach this and find out but I figure someone here knows and can answer my question quickly.

I am heading to NM in Dec for an elk hunt. I am planning on bringing 2 rifles and my .44mag Redhawk. Is there any issue with me transporting a pistol over state lines? I will have to drive through CA, and Arizona before hitting NM.

Thanks,

Steve

federal law says that if the guns are unloaded and in a locked case in the locked trunk of your car and that you are the registered owner theres no way that you can be charged with any crime by simply driving thro a state with the guns in that condition, call and check with the NRA to get a written copy of the regs

I suppose you could end up going through an Indian Reservation or two as well. If so, there may be exceptions to the federal rules.

NM & AZ have laws much more in the spirit of of the 2nd Amendment than CA. You can even carry your pistol concealed in NM without a permit.

Whoa on that concealed carry thing in NM! They require a CCW in NM. Like 340 Mag said keep the guns locked and unloaded and you should be fine all the way. I would hold off completely on trying to carry concealed with out a permit, but that is just me.

From the NRA website:
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
*The carrying of concealed weapons is forbidden in New Mexico. The recently enacted statute, providing for the issuance of concealed carry permits, has been declared unconstitutional by the New Mexico Supreme Court.[/b]

It definately makes it easier while in the field if you prefer a shoulder holster and have a jacket over it.

Ther firsst sentence of the part you pasted from the NRA website is "The carrying of concealed weapons is forbidden in New Mexico."

Seems plain to me that you can not carry concealed there. Or did I miss something?

Yes, click on their link. It's confusing. It is law but that law was declared unconstitutional by NM's supreme court which makes it okay to carry in the state; however, I'm not a lawyer. So, I don't think I'd ever carry concealed there within any city limit where ordinances could be contradictory to state rulings.

Why seek out trouble?

But, in the field outside of communities in NM, I'd not worry if my jacket or shirt covered up my holstered pistol making it concealed.
