I am dying to sink my hands into this project for the first time. However, I am also new to electronics and wish to make sure that I have the proper equipment. Can anyone give me advice on an effective soldering iron and any related soldering products that will help me to be successful in my first attempt? (product names and numbers from radio shack would be greatly appreciated.) Thanks in advance for any assistance you might provide.

Hi coop,
As a very minimum I'd get the following:
15 Watt pencil soldering iron RS# 64-2051
Replacement tip for above - #64-2052
clear flux solder #64-018
Some telephone wire - the stranded type! (maybe salvage this somewhere - lots of dead phones around)
wire strippers # 64-2129
clippers #64-1833
Some sort of small Phillips screwdriver set - they sell several kits.

Useful but not required stuff:
de-soldering pump #64-2098
de-soldering braid #64-2090
"extra hand" # 64-2063
anti-static wrist strap # 276-2397

I'm sure I've forgotten something important - maybe someone else will add to the list.

Good luck,
Archilochus

Has anyone considered making these units for the less experienced?
Could save them some cash in the long run not that I want to discourage anyone from trying it.
