Did they provide you with a list of references? That's the best place to start...especially if they have some hunters who did not tag out. Call a few of them, though... so you can sort through the feedback.
If you end up hunting with them, please do post up in the Guide Review section, as well as here on the forum. Let us know how it went, and how you liked the service.
hunted with them after seeing dean(d) and (e)ernie on the cover of fishing and hunting news with nize size boar. article said a lot of hogs on their lease of the guenoc ranch in middletown. i think the price was 550. saw hogs right of the bat in the permanent pasture and dean wanted me shoot. i said no, not what i was looking for, wanted trophy boar, something to put on wall. drove to next pasture saw about 20 hogs feeding with cows and looked at the but no boar, then dean spots nice boar about 1000yds away across pasture. boar was big judging by the set of balls he had. cut directly across pasture to within 125-150 yds and boar was limping, easy pickings huh, yaeh right shot right over top. damn it,
went after other hogs that we looked at earlier and saw new boar with group with nice long razor hair. snuck up to that group and got within 25-30 yds . dean looked at them at told me to shoot the one with the high hair that WE both had agreed on was the boar. shot and hogs go everywhere and im dumbfounded thinking i killed boar and dont even think about reloading. hogs were also around a bend on a small knoll feeding down only could see backs and butts.went up to see what my boar looked like, boy what a monster, about 60lbs wet, sow, had same razor back hair. i was f-ing pissed, at myself first for not making sure that was boar i was going to kill, 4hr drive, 550 dollars, and one maybe 60lb sow, but also not pleased with guide for rushing shot and not instructing me to correct animal. I know it happens , but when u save for guided hunt and u dont have alot of money to begin with, and intention of boar, not first hunt or hog ive killed, its pretty much pisses u off.
guides seemed as though as soon as hog down, off ranch and on to next money to be made, didnt even see any other part of ranch and i think that is part of guiding also. I will say though after ernie skinned out his clients fish in the barrel (3) hogs that he let me ride with him to dump of heads and skins in case we saw one i could shoot one for a lesser charge
I never hunted with D&E but I have hunted has well has a lot of other JHO member's with Marty Rovenstine out of San Miguel, Cal he is listed in our guider service forum I missed a nice shot at a big boar but hey thats how it go's sometimes thats why its called hunting. A lot of the guys like Deedy's check out our guide forum you will see some favorites.
sounds like bs to me. If the guides know what your looking for, and blow it by telling you it's a trophy....60lb sow, they should've kept that one for their freezer, and let you shoot the right hog. Sounds like poor guiding to me.
I see this is an old thread but feel obligated to respond. I haven't yet used them but met Dean of D & E on Thanksgiving day and based on that experience - I feel confident giving a positive reference.
I was just finishing an unsuccessful hunt with my boy when I randomly waved at a guy in a truck heading the opposite direction on a little road (he was checking on one of his properties). He pulled out a photo collection of Monster pigs he'd guided people to (including one with Ted Nugent). My little boy was even more empressed. Dean clearly believes that the children are our future and invited us onto some of his prime hunting property. We got out of the truck and he had presents (camo hats) for us. We walked and talked as he was putting out some food for what looked like a million pigs based on the rooting. We learned a lot in a little time during this walk. He didn't have a lot of time as his Turkey was near cooked so he told me where he knew they liked to bed.
I'll try to remember to update after I officially use his guide service. I've also been requoting something he credits Ted Nugent with saying regarding teaching your children the outdoors tradition, "Hunt with them now so you don't have to hunt them later."
...Something strikes me about the comment of shooting a 60lb pig at 30 yards and being surprised it was small... I remember one time hunting with some buddies in San Louis Obismo. We were on a ridge and spotted 8 hogs about 1200 yards away (almost directly downhill). I stayed to spot while my buddies stalked. When they got close, they realized that all but the largest (a pregnant sow) were about 60lbs. They didn't shoot because they didn't want a 60lb pig.
