hello everyone, i just brought my first AR 15 and i'm thinking about using it for deer next year. i know the .223 is small for deer but i think with the perfect shot, they'll go down. what do you all think?

A friend of mine used one this season. Never got a shot, but I think it would've done the job. He is on a swat team and shoots a lot compared to most of us. I imagine his shot would have been placed well if he got the chance.

Over 200 yards you start to have some issues with velocity being high enough to cause major damage. At that point you would being folllowing a blood trail for ever.

There is no magazine capacity limit for hunting with a rifle as far as I know. California penal code is something different. If the rifle has a pistol grip or other evil features, then the limit is 10 rounds and it must be a fixed mag. If the gun is pre-ban and you have pre-ban 30 round mags, I believe those would be legal. My friend is swat and had 20 round detachable mags in his.

To be on the safe side, and not draw attention, I would stay 10 rounds or under.

I hunt with my ar. It is not 556 but 450 bushmaster. If you had some 75 grain rounds and had good shot placement I think you should be fine.

Some Federal lands prohibit the use of 10+ round magazines in hunting and target shooting(if allowed) within their jurisdiction.

The beauty of the AR is that its a modular design and you can swap out the top end for a more specialized round such as a 450 Bushie, 458 Socom or .30 Remmy AR for hunting. Or a .22 kit for plinking.
I'm a big fan of the .45 Colt so I'm going to get a 450 Bushiemaster upper when I get da funds.
