Went hunting on sunday with my friend's dogs and I was positioned up ahead with my 30-30 to hopefully get a shot at a fleeing hog. The dogs struck the first hog about a half mile above me far into a deep valley, they chased the hog straight down the valley and caught it about a quarter mile from where I was positioned. As soon as I heard more than one dog barking I took off running with my rifle and Buck Special. I got there maybe about 5 minutes after the bay had started. The hog, much larger than any of the dogs was backed into a rock corner, he was doing a real good job of keeping the dogs off of him. As soon as I got there, one of our dogs Honeygirl (a 45lb Airedale/cur) went in to catch, the hog spun out of the corner trying to shake the dog, all the while there were about 5 dogs standing around and baying, too scared to go in for the grab. This whole time I was waiting for a shot with the 30-30 there was too many dogs and too much commotion to get a clear shot, I uncocked the hammer and threw the gun down. I drew my knife and went in to stick the pig (There was only one dog attached so it wasn't an easy task). The hog shook honeygirl off right then and turned straight at me, I was standing about 3 or 4 feet from the hog and he started coming at me, right then another dog Coco flew in and grabbed the hog, keeping the nasty boar away from my shins. I jumped up on the rock and the hog backed himself in again, Coco got stuck in between the rock and hog and got wacked 3 or 4 times into the rock. Right while this was happening I stuck the hog about 3 or 4 times into the top of the back aiming for the lungs, I Was positioned about 2 feet above the back of the hog and behind him so I had to lean forward and reach down. Honeygirl went in again and grabbed an ear while the rest of the dogs kept baying. As soon as she grabbed the ear I lunged in and grabbed the boars back leg and tried to flip him. I had to kick him in his ribs and twist his legs to get him on his side. I stuck him in the heart and he was dead about 5 seconds later. We had to take Coco to the vet and get a few cuts stitched up and examined by a doctor. Honey girl, and another dog George both got nice cuts but we cleaned them and and stapled them up. The boar weighed out at 102lbs after being dressed. We estimated it at about 130-140lbs. It had about 2.25" razor sharp tusks. The weird thing about the hog was that it only had 3 legs. It's front left foot was missing from right below the ankle joint. It was an old wound and the hog was still healthy and still using its stump as a foot. This boar didn't get old by learning to flee, the only way a 3 legged hog survives is by being able to fend off any opponents.

The adrenaline rush of this whole experience has had me shaking ever since it happened (not really). As soon as I got the the thing was just throwing dogs left and right, I was so worried that it would kill one of our dogs and had to go in for the kill even with only one dog grabbing. Im just happy to say I still have my baby maker attached and all the dogs are alive. If I hadn't been blocking trail I couldn't say the outcome would have been good.

Sorry the pictures are so bad, it's from my cel phone...I took better pictures but have to wait until the roll's filled up.

Good job, I really don't like it when dogs hurt but sometimes it happens. Hope the dogs are well. Nice cutters on that hog.

EB,

Nice exciting story. The hog looks mean.

And congratulations for keeping intact your baby-maker.

Aloha Ev, you back on Kaua'i or still stay mainland? Great adventure! I'm in the process of making a boar spear using a SKS bayonet for the blade, getting too old, and lost some flexibility from intallation of metal hardware in back in last surgery so need to extend my range a tad (turning into one old stiff fut). I'll post pics when pau, hopefully try it out in Kaupo with hounds in February.

Im on Kauai now...been hunting almost every week...feels so good to be home

Ive thought about using a spear, but it seems like it would be a pain in the butt to drag through uluhe fern and all the other thick overgrowth we have here.

Hey I am heading to Kona in April, taking the kids for their spring break. Is there good hog hunting around Kona? Anyone know of a good guide or source of local info on the topic? Would appreciate any 411 you got!

Amen, terrain does dictate choice of weapon be it bladed weapons or firearms. I do wish more public areas here was open to handguns, small handy comforting package for in the thick stuff.
