Hawaii Hunting opportunities for an Australian

Hello all,

In august this year I will be travelling home from Canada after the softball world series and will be looking to do a Hunt in Hawaii.

At this stage Im most interested in hunting a Mouflon Sheep if possible, but would also like to know other game species that are worth a hunt.

Im after some information on the best way to do this and also would like to offer a swap hunt in Australia if thats what they are after. I regularly hunt Fallow and Red Deer on state land and have great access to Goats, which also have fallow and mountain boars in the same area.

Any Information would be great as I dont know where to start on this one.

Hunt the island Lanai. It's a 45 minute ferry ride from Lahaina Maui.
Contact Gary Onuma at the Lanai Co. There's only one town on the island, Lanai City, with a total population of about 2,000 so ask for him when you get there and he won't be hard to find, everybody knows everyone.
The axis deer rifle hunts are $275 a day, 3 deer limit, only one can be a buck. It also includes unlimited mouflon, either sex.

I know of a few websites for Hawaii guide services BUT before you get drawn into the commercialized world of classy websites and high-priced exotic game hunts, I recomend you take Glass Eye's advice and contact Gary Onuma.

Here's some more guide services, although you can have a lot of fun (and a successful hunt) simply by going onto the right public land piece and spending the day walking around. ...Well, maybe not for a trophy mouflon so here's the guides. All the big island and Lanai guides can conduct sheep hunts but the Big Island sheep are not likely purebred because they can cross with the feral sheep.

Very important. You must have your ORIGINAL hunter safety certificate to be able to buy a hunting license. You must send a copy to DOFAW.net and apply for the "letter of exemption" the letter is what you present to the license agent. Best to do it all online. Fax a copy of hunter safety and then buy and print the license online.

That makes life interesting for gibbo. We don't have "hunter safety" certificates, at least not anything like you guys. We have to do a firearms awareness course to get a gun license, and we have to do a hunting knowledge test to hunt public land, but they are both Aussie tests and I am sure they would be invalid in the US. There must be some way around this for non residents or guides would have trouble getting OS customers.

I'd give 'em what you got. It's done by fax and internet so the response would be fast. My guess is that they'd accept it.
