I am taking my boys on a short sierra fishing trip this weekend. We want to stop along the way and fish working are way up to Bishop. We are tent camping and its going to be a very short trip. Anyone have some suggestions where we can fish along the way? And maybe a place to throw up our tents?
Thanks:fishin:

Owens river is good fishing but you got to be in the heat, i would try and plan your trip in the higher elevation camp sites and stream fish there it will be in the 70s down in the valley your looking at 90-100+ thats not fun. once you hit Bishop i would head straight for "Rock Creek Lake" On your way up you could go up to Glacier Lodge and Big pine creek excellent fishing in the creek, take 'Crocker Road its a ways up 12miles out of Big pine at 8000ft very very nice up there. Then when you get to Bishop i would head for North lake South lake and "Lake Sabrina" and Pleasant Valley Reservoir i would fish the Owens river right there "Read your regs some of that river is barbless and artificial s only. Good luck Google fishing up the 395 you will get a lot of good info, also check "Jim Matthew's fishing report" he is spot on when it comes to Sierra fish reports.

That sounds good thanks. I was planning to fish Lone Pine Creek then head to Sand Traps and fish there and then I was thinking about setting up camp at Pleasant Valley Reservoir but It will be pretty hot there im sure. The next morning I was planning to head straight for the Owens off Benton Crossing. I need to find a place to throw are tents up that me be a bit cooler? I never been to Rock Creek Lake but that sounds good.

Dont stop short at Lone Pine and the sand traps if your going to Benton Crossing.
Get to the top of the grade at Toms place and either camp above Toms place at French Camp or below 395 there is a cool camp site right on the creek
great fishing at either spot
I fished the owens yesterday and though I caught a couple fish it was pretty much a dry fly or nothing due to all the moss floating in the river (it was BAD)...

the wild trout section of the lower owens looked better but it was about 100 degrees there.
I would either focus on the Bishop drainage or rock creek
either one of those will be a lot cooler than the valley
they are supposed to get some weather this week so it may cool down
the owens is gonna be tough to fish no matter what though. although it is doable if you are hell bent on fishing it...

+1 French Camp. I like watching the outside temperature as you drive from Bishop to toms place 100 at bishop then when you get to toms place it reads 75.

Ok I will watch for scorpions. I had to swipe one off my younger sons stomach once. I am really leaning towards Rock Creek. What do you think?

Fish Report:
Fished Lone Pine Creek on the way up and caught 2 trout. Next we went to Sand Traps and caught nothing. Getting late so we headed to Pleasant Valley Campground and set up camp and fished the river in camp. Caught a couple trout. Raccoons got into my tote in back of truck that night and ate 15.00 bag of jerkey and half my bag of peanuts! I was prepared for them and had that tote tied up with tie down strap. Didnt help they peeled up the corner and chowed. Next morning we broke down camp and went to fish the Owens. Caught 2 trout there. Left for Rock Creek and drove all the way up and didnt care for the campground we saw so we drove back down and fished the creek on the way down and caught nothing. Checked out French campground and didnt want to stay there. We drove back to Convict and checked it out and didnt find camping we liked there. Fished Mcgee creek and seen them but they wouldnt bite. Next we drove back down the hill to Pleasant Vally campground and set up camp again. Overall only caught about 8 fish the whole time. Main thing is my two boys had fun camping and they caught a few fish. I needed the break from work so it was a good road trip. raccoon.jpg

Independence creek is very dependable for taling home fish. Especially at Grays Meadow buth upper and lower and in between. Have youy ever stay up at Whitney Portal? That is very cool compared to the valley floor, The campground is nice and the little pool at the portal is a great place to take kids fishing.

Have some specific spots for you if your interested. Not so kid friendly, but productive.

For another option maybe try this. Went up last weekend a couple days early for the Mt. Whitney hike to spend some time higher up before the hike. Went west out of Independence on Onion valley rd. to the Onion valley campground. A nice little campground at 9200 feet. Next day we hiked up to Gilbert lake where it was non-stop catching (and releasing) of little brookies on dry flies all day. Beautiful country, perfect cool temps, lots of fish, an easy hour to hour and a half hike. Also heard a few sooty grouse and saw half a dozen deer. Great day! On Sunday hiking up from the Whitney Portal we saw two hen sooty grouse with chicks. Very cool.

I've stayed at upper plenty of times. There's trout in that stream? Really? I've seen people "trying" but never thought they would actually catch anything. But again I know nothing about trout fishing.
