Help Using BLM Surface Managment maps

Hey all,
I ordered several surface managment maps from the BLM. Does anyone still use these? My plan was to go out today and just kind of walk some areas about an hour or so from home, since my license is not complete yet(I need my 4 hours). At least I can get a little familiar with the terrain.

I think I might need a map reading course..

Yes, always good to have a hard copy as a backup to GPS.

In looking at the threads I just wasn't hearing about hard copy maps everything was GPS, overlays for smartphones and gps devices. Then once i sat down with the maps i was throughly confused. I thought I was barking up the wrong tree with the maps. Like I said, I guess I'm going to just have to learn to read the maps...
