Don't worry about the hogs seeing one or the other. It's personal preference. DO YOU want the classic looks of nice wood and blued steel? Or do you want utilitarian durability and practicality of a stainless/synthetic rifle?
Polished SS will reflect, and pigs can see this though i'm not sure how they would react. I prefer a bead blasted finish on my SS guns. That being said my favorite pig gun is a blue steel 1894 Marlin 44 mag which I use rain or shine making sure I dry up and keep well oiled though many prefer to wax the blued steel. What I have found with my SS guns is that I tend to neglect them a tad because they are SS but they do rust with ignored too long. I like both so own both. The SS models make great truck/boat guns.
I've been thinking, I might just stay with my CZ 527 (7.62x39). According to the Conservation people, the pigs, where I intend to hunt are not very large. I'll probably use the Corbon 150gr. PSP. I can't imagine that not doing the job inside 100yrds, with good shot placement. --- I mentioned in another post, my CZ has amazing tiger-stripes. I would hate to scratch up that stock. I might even invest in a Remington 799 (C.D.) in the same caliber. The ammo is cheap enough for a lot of practice. Does anyone have any experience with this rifle?
Aloha Pecci,
I'm "old school" in my thinking as far as pig guns are concerned, and I prefer open sights for the type of pig hunting I do which is 95% forest with rain, humidity, thick vegetation, low light, with up close and personal ranges, so I have a Williams 5D receiver peep rear sight and factory front sight. I prefer a larger aperture for the sight or even the aperture removed thus making it a "Ghost Ring" sight, very rugged, and quick on acquiring target. I also have a 94AE Winchester Trapper lever action in 357 mag which I have mounted a AO/XS Ghost Ring sight with AO/XS post front sight, great for quick shots. I have had too many scopes get foggy, or the front lanse covered in moisture, and on occasion total failure of the scope so I prefer the simplicity of open receiver mounted peep sights. I do have scoped bolt guns but these are reserved for sheep and goats. As far as the 7.62 x 39 I have a friend who hunts with a Mak-90 and at forest ranges 150 yards and less this round which is comparable to the 30/30 works well for him he using the standard 125 grain soft points though I do believe all his shots have been within 50 yards due to the terrain. I think your CZ in 7.62 x 39 with a quality low power scope (2.5 magnification or less) should be fine. My hunting requires many time crawling down "pig tunnels" thru undergroth so as you may imagine this can be hard on rifle especially their optics. If your terrain more open then don't worry about it. Keep us posted on what you decide.
