Co-worker and myself went on a guided hog hunt up in Colusa county. Morning started out pretty typical, meeting the guide, paperwork, briefing, etc. Early in the morning saw 2 black hogs side hilling it at a pretty good pace. Tried to get in front of them, but no luck. Spent the rest of the day spotting both on foot and on the quads with no luck. Saw lots of fresh sign, but no pigs. It was getting late and we were a ways from the truck, so we decided to check out a couple other canyons on the way back.
As we were riding back on the quads we saw 2 pigs running away on the next hill over. We made our way to a place where we could look down in the canyon where the pigs were headed. Didn't see them, but saw another group of about 8-10 running away. We stopped and glassed for a while, then saw 3 pigs about 1/4 mile away. We decided to put the stalk on them. The wind was in our favor, so we set off on foot and made our way to a high point, then walked down into the drainage where we had last seen them. As we were making our way down the hill we jumped a group of about 10-12 pigs. We had a shot at one of them, but decided not to take it, since they did not seem very spooked and we were after the big boar. They ran down the hill, then joined the other 3 hogs. We waited for them to settle down, then continued our stalk to about 100-125 yards( no rangefinder). About that time the big boar stood up and gave us a nice broadside shot. Put the crosshairs on him and pulled the trigger. He dropped, then got up and ran. Most of the pigs scattered, but a couple of them ran, then stopped and looked back. A large sow presented a clean shot. The sow didn't go very far, but the boar went about 100 yards and piled up next to a manzanita bush.
After a short drag and a long ride back to the truck the work began(in the dark). The boar we guessed to be about 200+ lbs and the sow was probably 150 lbs.
Had a great hunt and the guide was very persistent. Pork in the freezer and wife is happy.
Sorry for the long story.
