On the 11th, I am going to SLO to attend Cal Poly. I was wondering if anyone hunts hogs around that part. I have been hunting hogs in Hawaii for 3 years. Mostly with dogs and knife, a few times with bow and arrow. IF anyone needs help flipping, sticking or carrying hogs I would be more than happy to come along.

Are their any good public hunting units in the area? What are my chances of getting a hog if I were to go to a public unit. What are the laws in California regarding hunting hog dogs?

Welcome! In regards to public land hog hunting, just do a search as there is a plethora of info on this site. You can hunt with dogs all you want. But in CA it is illegal to stick them with knife or spear. Dumb I know, but that the law. The pig has to be killed by bullet or arrow. I'v grabbed em before too, but here you got to finish then with a gun. A pistol is just fine.

Yes, there are a number of Pig spots but the majority of them are on Private lands. Check out Camp Roberts (Public Area). It is very close to Cal Poly SLO and by the time you graduate you'll be an expert on it. Good Luck

Your heading into Pig territory and one of the best places in California. I lived in SLO for about a year and a number of my roommates hunted pigs since they were so many of them. However, to hunt in California you need a hunter safety training course (10 hours) and a hunting license.

The Los Padres and wealth of other public land is all near by, so I don't think you have to worry.

I lived up there for about 5 yrs. Graduated in 1988. I looked all over for public land that held pigs but was never successfull. Although I did see a lot of pigs and wild turkey on private land off hwy. 1 between SLO and Morro Bay. Maybe you could get permission? I never tried. Quail hunting is pretty good above Santa Margarita and east of Santa Maria along the river off of hwy. 168. We use to also do pretty good on ducks and brant in Morro Bay. You would have tp check at the Morro Bay DFG office to see if this is still allowed.

Welcome to the site, Evan. I'm pleased to see another dog hunter join the JHO ranks! I spend most of my time running hogs with dogs, so I thought I would include some pertinent information on how it must be done in California...

1. Before pursuing hogs, you must procure a California Hunting License and a Wild Pig tag. They are currently available to California residents for $9.20 for five tags and $13.90 for a single nonresident tag.

2. Feral hogs are (erroneously) managed as big game. You can legally pursue them from 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset.

3. There are no daily bag or possession limits for feral hogs. All caught or bayed hogs must be immediately killed or immediately released. You may not retain feral hogs for the purposes of training dogs.

3. You are limited to one dog per licensed hunter (possessing hog tags) during the general deer season. The County of San Luis Obispo is located in A zone, so that season starts on the second Saturday of August and extends for 44 days. The season will end 21-Sep-03.

4. For the remainder of the year, you are limited to three (3) dogs per licensed hunter (possessing hog tags) for the pursuit of feral hogs.

5. There are Dog Control Zones in effect throughout the state that prohibit the exercise or hunting of running dogs from April 6 to the day before the general deer season opens. In your case, the southern-most Dog Control Zone barely extends into the southern portion of San Luis Obispo County, so it shouldn't be a problem for you.

6. As was previously mentioned, California law prohibits the take of feral hogs with knife or spear. They must be taken in accordance with the methods allowed for big game including rifles and pistols with centerfire cartridges, bow and arrow, crossbow, muzzleloaders and shotguns with slugs.

Nearly every November, I bring my hounds along to Lopez Lake (just south of SLO) for a family reunion. I have got after some hogs in the nearby Los Padres National Forest. If you end up with some dogs while you are living in CA, I would suggest you try hunting around there; judging by the brush the hogs were bayed in, I am not too sure that it would be suitable for anyone but dog hunters.

If you feel like driving to Northern California to chase some hogs sometime, shoot me a PM or email.

I live about 20 miles from Sacramento so you'd be looking at a 4-5 hour drive.

Well, I've only been to the Big Island so I don't know how thick the bush around Kauai is, but I would be willing to bet that our manzanita and brush would remind you of home!

EvBouret,
I was just wondering if you were from from Kona, on the Big Island. Went Hog hunting over there with a guy who's son was starting school here now. I gues it is NOT ssuch a small world because it is not you.

Good luck on the hog hunting. I would try to hunt Camp Roberts. I got a nice hog on a ranch next to it.
