Looks like I'll be coming home around mid-June through mid-July and I've got a buddy that wants to do some hog hunting. I know the story with public land... pigs are scarce, a lot of hunting pressure, etc. Are there any general areas on public land to start looking, or would it be a waste of time during the summer? I'll be in Nor Cal, Sacramento, but driving to SoCal won't be an issue. Any info will be a big help.

Was thinking about Coalinga... good idea, bad idea? Lots of pressure? Anything....

Mid May thru June is prime hunting time for hogs. As far as public land goes, good luck.

Thanks Chopper. I wouldn't mind checking out your place, but I've never used archery equiptment in my life. Now looking towards the Los Padres NF. It'll be nice just to get out and stomp some ground, regardless if we take anything or not.

You might check into FHL. I dont know what their hunt schedule is but a lot of the folks on here do hunt their with mixed success.

Check out this link.

Hey Cali -

If public land is all your budget will allow, then your best bets are either FHL or Camp Roberts (if they're open).

Coalinga is an iffy shot at best, especially that time of year. Watch the weather and pray for late rain. Clear Creek and Laguna Mountain are also possibilities. Your best bet is if you can get out and scout, or if you have plenty of time to get into the back country and camp. Find a water hole, or even a good wet spot, and the rest is up to good timing and good luck.

For the record, when I do a public land hog hunt in the summer, I generally head to the Clear Creek area.

Of course, for the other record, I have yet to kill a hog on public land.

thanks a lot fellas. I'll check into a lot more things when it gets closer. I might just try FHL and clear creek. I've heard some decent things about the both of them. I don't think Camp Roberts is open around that time.

Rancho-
I will most definitely consider it, depending on mine and my buddy's budget at that time. let me know some more info.

MUCH APPRECIATED!

At Laguna Mountain hogs are nocturnal from plenty of pressure and on weekends you will run into hords of "hunters" that get frustrated by 10 am, starting target shooting and smoking cigarettes! I have asked every one I met there, none of them ever got anything, even though there was plenty of sign. I think it is more likely to get shot at there than getting a hog.

The problem with LM is also that it is a small area, so you can not outhike the morons.

George

PS: I will try Los Padres this holiday break. It will at least be larger than any BLM spot in the Hollister area.
